I tuck myself back under the blanket and nod. I get that more than he knows.

“Have you ever watchedYellowstone?” I change the subject.

“With Kevin Costner?”

“That’s the one.”

“I’ve seen about half of the first season.”

“That’s where I’m at! Do you want to join me?”

“That depends.” He points at my plate. “Is there any of that left?”

“Yep, but here.” I hand him a plate. “Will you get me some more?”

He chuckles and grabs my plate quickly, dishing out dinner and joining me on the couch. We don’t speak as I start the show and begin to eat.

I want to ask him what he’s thinking, but it’s clear neither of us have an answer for how to solve our situation.

I peek a glance at him, and he must sense it because he looks at me too. He gives me a forced smile and then nudges my leg with his.

His touch . . . damn it.

I don’t want him to leave.

CHAPTER NINE

Mark

I don’t want to just be friends.

Coming home to find Sydney on the couch the other day was eye opening. I hadn’t realized how much I enjoyed her presence. Then, after I sat next to her, something just felt right, and I wanted to do more than just sit there.

Now, considering our current life situation and arrangement, I think it’s the worst idea in the world. We have a lot to sort out and deciding whether or not to have sex doesn’t need to be on the list.

But if she initiated something . . . would I turn her away?

On one hand, I feel like maybe it would be her hormones talking and maybe she isn’t really into me like I’m finding myself into her. On the other hand, arguing with her feels wrong. She’s pregnant and about to go through so many changes. I just want her to be happy. If this is what she wants, I don’t have a choice but to give it to her.

“How’s the semester been treating you?” Winston asks, taking the seat next to mine in the library. I’ve been here for about a half hour with Tripp and Lennox, but the two of them have been so focused, we haven’t spoken much.

“It’s going all right. I don’t know why I thought this last semester would be the easiest. I can already tell that the professors aren’t going to let up.”

“Yeah, they are hardcore this year. Still, this is the last one left till our next adventure.”

“Our two very, very different adventures.”

He laughs. His phone, the one sitting on the wooden table, begins to vibrate. It draws the attention of students around us and even the head librarian.

Winston waves his hand in apology and silences the call, but not before I see Kass’s face light up the screen.

It’s a smile I’ve never seen before, and even though looking at his screen is a little weird, it feels good to know she’s happy. To know that as stupid as I was, she was able to find someone who will treat her as she deserves.

“Sorry,” Winston says, replying to her call with a text since we aren’t allowed to talk on our phones in the study room. “I didn’t mean to distract you.”

I shake my head. “Oh, you didn’t distract me.” I pat his back. “I need to pack up anyway. Syd has a doctor’s appointment today, and we get to find out if it’s a boy or girl.”

All three of my friends look up.
