“But,” I barely breathe out as my breathing picks up.

“But what?” he asks and kisses me right under my ear. Slowly, he kisses down my jaw. I turn my head, giving him better access to my neck as his hand swoops around to my backside. He presses his groin against me, and the firmness I feel sends the urge to wrap my legs around him to my brain. I’d do it, too, if we weren’t in public.

“But what?” he repeats.

What were we talking about?

Oh, right, he called me his.

“I’m not yours,” I manage to say.

He stops everything he’s doing and steps back. I reach out to him, grasping his shirt so he can’t go too far.

“You’re not?”

I shake my head.

“Okay,” he says so casually that perhaps I imagined the heated moment we just had. He unlocks the door and opens it for me. Once I’m inside and I’ve buckled myself in, he starts to close the door but stops.

“You might not be mine, Syd, but I’m yours. I’m forever yours.”

Then he shuts the door and jogs around to the driver’s side.

The moment he gets in, I lean over the center.

“I want to be yours, too, Mark.”

He cups my face and kisses me hard.

Will he still be mine when I ask him to stay?

Mark

My mind won’t stop replaying my afternoon. Sydney standing outside the English doors waiting for me.

It truly feels like everything is right in the world. Looking down to see her tucked into my side right now isn’t so bad either.

One day it will be me and her and . . .

“Hey, you know what I just thought of,” I say out loud to Syd, who, even after today, is still curled into my side like she is every single night while she watches TV and I read.

“What did you just think of?” she almost purrs into my ear.

Oh, this woman. I am crazy about her.

“We need to pick out a name. For our daughter.”

“Oh, right, I have my list memorized. Do you?”

“You have a list?”

I have two names in mind, and she has a whole list.

“I have two names.”

“Just two? I have like six or seven.”

“Wow. Okay.” I scratch the back of my neck. “How do we pick?”
