I chuckle as her bottom lip drops.
“How do you know that?”
“I’ve known you since we were kids, Calla. I pay attention. Twenty bucks says you won’t be able to guess my order, though.”
She rolls her eyes.
“Smothered chicken burrito with extra cheese and green chili on the side.”
Damn.
“Huh, and here I thought you hated me enough to not notice something as simple as my order at a Mexican restaurant.”
Her left brow rises with her smile, but she doesn’t say anything. Our waiter comes, we place our orders, adding a margarita on the rocks for each of us.
Since we’ve broached the topic lightly, now might be a good time to ask why specifically she doesn’t care for me. If I knew, I could remedy it, and maybe even redeem myself. Fix one problem, then maybe the next would follow.
“So, I have to ask—”
“Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god.” Calla jumps from her side of the booth, rushing to mine and pushing me farther into the booth so she can sit by me.
She twists to face me with a hand blocking one side of her face.
“Everything okay?” I ask.
“My brother just walked in with Grey.”
“Really?” I start to rise, but she pulls me back down.
“Don’t.”
“They could join us.”
“No, they can’t.”
I chuckle. “Why not?”
Her head tilts, and she glares at me.
Ah. She doesn’t want him to see us together.
“Let me see where he’s sitting.”
I slowly rise to peek over the booth but drop quickly.
“He’s coming this way.”
“Shit. Shit. Please don’t let him see us. It’ll come with questions, and I hate lying to him, and I—”
I can let her keep ranting and chance her brother hearing her voice, or I can do something to definitely make sure he doesn’t see us as the waiter walks past our table to seat him.
Option B is the obvious choice, as I’ve learned, if I want to get on her good side. My insta plan though—maybe not.
I grab her face and crush my lips to hers; all panic in her voice quickly comes to a halt. I run a hand through her hair and pull her closer. The placement of my arm and hand should shield our faces long enough for him to pass by without noticing us. When I think enough time has passed, I pull back, but the slip of her tongue past my lips brings me back. She moans and then jerks away.
Her eyes are wide, and she sucks in a breath.
“That was, um, a great idea. Thank you.”
