“You get used to it.”

“Yeah, probably. I bet—what’s that? Why are you looking at me like that? What now?”

He’s so easy to read. I hate that I love it.

He chuckles and grabs his neck. “Honestly?”

“Yes, please.”

“I’m thinking I don’t want to be on my computer right now. I don’t want to think about this book.” The fire in his gaze keeps me from asking what he’d rather be doing. I know.

Me. That’s what.

I clear my throat and slip off the edge of his desk. I could leave him and work alone—it’s definitely a smart choice—but a new feeling washes over me.

I don’t want to leave. I like being around Beck. I like the way I feel around him. I like that he believes in me. I like that we can just be together, and it feels right.

Instead of playing games or doing my usual MO, I take the route I should have taken weeks ago. I spin around and use my words.

“Won’t this complicate things?” I ask.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, I want to be doing what you’re thinking we should be doing, but we’re married, Beck.”

He chuckles, and I glare at him.

“If that weren’t a factor, would you still want me?” he asks.

“Yes.”

“Then let’s just put the fact we’re married to the side for now. We’re doing this because we want to, not because of a piece of paper.”

“I know, but what happens if—”

“Don’t think about it, Calla. I have no idea what tomorrow holds, but today there is us, and that’s where I want to be.”

Us.

I think I like the sound of that.

Slowly, I walk toward him. He turns in his chair, reaching for me.

As soon as I straddle his lap, he captures my lips with his own and kisses me like a man starved. He holds onto me as if I’m his lifeboat. It sounds so silly, but kissing Beck is where I’m meant to be, and I can’t believe I fought it for so long.

Without breaking the kiss, Beck stands, holding me at my rear, and walks us to my room. He sits on the bed and lies back with me on top.

“For the record,” he says, “after this, you’re not sleeping anywhere but in my bed. Got it?”

“Yes.” I lift my shirt over my head. He sits up to do the same. Once we’re both topless, he flips us over and starts unbuttoning my jeans.

“I’ve been thinking of this moment for too damn long, Calla.”

“Since Vegas?”

“Before. I just never thought it was a reality till Vegas.”

“I thought you always hated me.”
