Honestly, I’m not even mad that someone would think that, but I am intrigued to know how this came about and how long we’ve been together, considering Grey’s last football camp afternoon, before I kissed her, was just yesterday. What exactly has she been up to?

“Grey told them that we were, and I didn’t deny it.”

I can’t help it. I laugh. That kid of mine is something else.

I love him.

“It’s not funny, Simon. I only went along with it because all they do is talk about you, and once they heard we were dating, they apologized and said they’d stop.”

I rub my chin. “Oh, so you were jealous?”

“What? Of them talking about you? No. It’s just annoying to listen to it for close to six hours a week.”

“Last night hints that you might have been jealous.” I smirk.

She punches my shoulder.

“Stop it. Don’t tease about that.”

“No?” I say and step toward her. She bumps into the desk, and I know I shouldn’t kiss her again, but fuck, I want Greer more than I’ve wanted anything in a long, long time. Staying away from her is like asking a kid to hold a bag of candy and not eat it.

“Simon, are you about to do something stupid?”

Her words make me pause. Yes, I was. It would have been worth it. But continuing to tease, as Greer puts it, isn’t something I want to do to her.

“Well, okay then.” I back up.

“Okay then, what?” she asks and holds her hands up. “What do we tell them at the party? Oh, wait, I’ll just not go. I’ll hide in my house, and you tell them I’m working.”

Again, she just moves on from whatever could have happened between us so easily. Is it possible I’m imagining the amount of attraction we have toward one another?

“You can’t miss Grey’s party, Greer.”

“Ugh. I know it.”

She flops down into the chair and swivels right to left. Did she think I would be upset? Faking a relationship wasn’t exactly on my plans for this summer, but it’s one afternoon, and right now, I’d do anything to help Greer after all she’s done for me.

“So what will we do?” she asks.

I sit across from her; grateful Tobias convinced me to get more than just a single desk chair in this room.

“We just tell them that we’re dating. It’s one party. It’s going to be fine.”

She stares past me at the door.

“One party. Yeah. I can do that.”

“Good. And it’ll probably work better if we keep this between us. The fewer people who know, the better chances we have to pull this off.”

“I agree.”

She relaxes back into the chair, turning to give me a smile.

“I better go get Grey and get out of your hair so you can get some work done.”

She stands quickly, giving me a small wave as she walks out the door.

But I don’t move right away—her words hit me.
