She nodded.
“Move your gaze to the bottom left and over a touch.”
She squinted her eyes and leaned forward.
“Do you want to use the binoculars?” There was a pair next to them.
She screwed up her nose. “No thanks. Who knows what’s on those things? Point it out for me.”
He moved in closer to get her vision in line with his pointed finger. “There are a few buildings in front of it but mine’s a bit taller. If you squint really hard, you can see a blue-and-white round symbol on the top of it. Do you see it now?”
She shook her head. “Nope.”
He raised his hands and hesitated for a beat before putting them on her shoulders. He turned her a touch to the left and pointed again. His body pressed against her side, and he felt her go still.
Lowering his head closer to her face to get a better sense of what she could see, he said, “Can you see it now?” He drew in a deep breath to suppress the growing desire.
“There are too many buildings. I’m not sure,” her voice came out in a husky whisper.
She turned her head to the side, their lips just inches apart. Her gaze dropped to his mouth, and her tongue darted out slightly to lick her bottom lip. He groaned inwardly. All he needed to do was lean in a fraction and kiss her.
One millimeter…
Two millimeters…
Someone jostled them from behind, and the connection broke. Theo cleared his voice and stepped away while Chloe busied herself with wrapping her coat more firmly around her.
“Let’s go around again,” Theo said, deciding not to point anything else out to her. There was no way he was standing so close to her again. When he did, his brain switched off, and his dick shot to attention. Being near her made him forget about his failed marriage and vow to never marry again. Chloe was a dangerous temptation, one he couldn’t seem to avoid.
He groaned, aloud this time.
Chloe touched his arm, snapping his attention to her. “Theo, is something wrong?” She scanned his face.
He shifted uncomfortably. “I’m fine. It’s getting cold, we should leave.”
Chloe’s face dropped slightly. He felt like a jerk for cutting their night short and disappointing her.
The ride on the way down was just as quiet as the one on the way up.
When they stepped out of the building, they rushed into the double-parked car.
After a few minutes of uncomfortable silence, Chloe turned in her seat. “Are you sure you’re okay? It looked like something upset you.”
“Heights make me a little squeamish sometimes.” Another lie. They kept dripping from his mouth. He changed the subject. “How did you like the Empire State Building? Did it meet your expectations?”
She sank back into the seat. “Oh my God. It was beautiful. You were right about going at night. The lights were spectacular.”
“Any more tourist destinations you want to see?”
“Are you offering to take me?” she asked coyly. He must have pulled a face because she laughed. “Don’t worry, I won’t make you go.” The car pulled up in front of her building. “Thank you for a great evening.”
“It was fun.” That wasn’t a lie. Up until he remembered his disastrous marriage, he’d been having a great time.
“Good night.” She got out of the car, and he watched her make her way inside.
He breathed out a heavy sigh and tilted his head on the back of the seat. Thank fuck the night was over. And it wasn’t because he didn’t enjoy her company; it was because he liked her company a little too much.
