“Don’t bother.I already know you’ll be coming.”I run my fingers across her lips.
Before I can pull my hand away, she kisses the tip of my thumb in a sucking motion.
I get harder.“This is definitely not professional.”I rest my hands on her hips, thrilled that I can do this now.“So is that a yes you want my help?”
She glances at my crotch.“With that?”
I laugh.“With teaching your ex a lesson.”
“I just want my life back and if he suffers in the process, well, who am I to stand in the way of a lesson?”
“Especially when it’s overdue,” I say. Then I frown.“I mean it when I say that my help isn’t tied to us having sex.I don’t play that way.”
“I know.”She brushes her hand along the side of my face and it’s heavenly.“I should get back to work before your grandmother arrives.”
No sooner than Salem heads to the door than it swings open and my grandmother enters. She stops when she sees Salem.
Then to my surprise, my grandmother smiles warmly at her.“The food you sent was such a delight.I’ve never had such delicate pastries before.”
“I’ll make more for you if you like.”
My grandmother pats Salem’s arm.“You made those?”
Salem nods.“I love to cook. Some results are better than others,” she says with a laugh.
“Well, those results were delicious.Do send more when you have a chance.”
I watch the exchange feeling like I’m in a parallel universe. My grandmother has never taken the time to chat with one of my assistants. And she certainly never patted their arm.
Once we’re alone then says, “Heloise called me and filled me in on the situation between Salem and DB Jewelry.”
I take a seat across from her.“Why would Heloise do that?”
“She said she wants to help Salem, but her company will suffer a financial hit if she does since her idiot husband wanted to do business with them.”
“She was apologizing?”
“No, she wanted to see if there was anything I could do to help.”My grandmother waves her hand.“I called in some favors.”
“And?”
“I think the next several days will be quite interesting.”
“Is that why you’re in the city?”My grandparents own a place in Lucky River, Texas and prefer to spend the majority of their time there.
“One of the reasons. Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Tell you….”
“What happened to you when you were a child.”Tears fill her eyes and she blinks them away.“I just found out from your grandfather and, sick or not, I let him know what I thought about him keeping that kind of information from me.”
“He told you?”
“He was under anesthesia for a procedure.”She dismisses my concern with a wave of her hand.“He’s fine.”
“It was a long time ago,” I say, not wanting her to be upset. She already kicked our father out of the family when she found out he caused my brother Theo’s wreck and left him to die.I don’t want her to shoulder more pain.
Not wanting to dwell on things of the past, I stand and move to my desk.“I have an updated report on the resort I visited.I’ll email that to you.But I’m rescheduling the visit to the Island of Midnight.”
