“My PI is verifying everything as we speak. You don’t want to leak this without proof. I told him we needed confirmation ASAP.”

I smiled even though he couldn’t see me. A guy like Brian wouldn’t want something like this to go public—for months. He’s been holding my injury over my head, all the while he was living a double life. And the closer we got to confirming all this shady shit, the closer I was to being done with him for good.

I pressed the phone to my ear. “You did good, Tony.”

He exhaled heavily into the phone. “I’ll keep you updated, but hang in there, big guy. Remember, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Speaking of smoke, I think I’ll go fire up a joint.”

I laughed. “Just don’t get too stoned. I need you focused.”

I hung up, and Becca slid her legs off my lap.

“This sounds promising.”

I dragged a hand down my face. “I sure do fucking hope so.”

One more game. Three more days. One more press conference.

Hopefully, everything would go according to plan, and we would move before Brian did. This was all coming down to timing. He was expecting money on Tuesday. He thought he was going to win because he didn’t know my people already had things moving.

He didn’t know Becca was going to release an article about what a douche he was.

He didn’t know management was going to hear everything from me.

He had no idea that his world was going to collapse in on him.

“I’m sorry, Nate,” Callie said from her end of the couch.

I shrugged. “It’s fine.”

All I needed to do was survive the next three days.

CHAPTER 31

BECCA

The house smelledof hairspray and perfume, and every surface in Nate’s living room was covered in makeup products and curling irons.

“Does anyone have a safety pin?” Callie called from the stairs. “The strap on my boot broke.”

“Why aren’t you wearing your new shoes?” I turned so she could read my lips, then went back to fixing my mascara.

“Because I changed my mind about what I was wearing.”

I looked over my shoulder again. “Aren’t you wearing Nate’s jersey?”

She rolled her eyes. “Yes, but I’m wearing a different jacket, and it won’t look good with the shoes I just bought.”

“Jesus.” Ember laughed beside me while applying some hairspray to her bangs.

“Check the medicine cabinet in Nate’s bathroom,” I said and went back to touching up my makeup.

I took a deep breath and leaned closer to the mirror. My nerves were all over the place today. This was going to be a tough matchup, and with everything going on lately, Nate needed this win now more than ever.

I set my mascara down and stared at my reflection.

“Are you okay?” Ember asked, fixing a few strands of her hair.

I glanced over at her in Nate’s jersey that I gave her to wear. After I wore Jax’s, he had a dozen sent to my house so I wouldn’t have any more excuses.
