If she dies, she dies.

That's the logical position. The reasonable one. The one I should be holding.

But my chest feels tight watching her walk deeper into the enclosure, and I can't quite draw a full breath.

Azhrael's attention fixes on her immediately. That massive form goes still in a way it never does for me anymore, his luminous eyes tracking her movement with what looks almost like anticipation. The aggressive tension that's been radiating off him all morning dissipates like smoke.

Lenna stops a few feet away from him, and I watch something transform in her posture. The careful neutrality she's worn all morning softens. Her shoulders drop. Her head tilts slightly to one side, and when she speaks, her voice carries warmth I've never heard directed at another living thing here.

"Hey, beautiful."

Beautiful. She called my most dangerous beastbeautifulin a tone usually reserved for beloved pets or small children.

Azhrael moves toward her. Slow, deliberate, none of the predatory calculation he shows everyone else. He lowers his head—actuallylowersit—until his face is level with hers.

And Lenna smiles.

It's the smile from my dream. Soft and genuine and completely unguarded. The one I thought I'd invented, that my subconscious had constructed from wishful thinking or confused attraction or whatever fucked-up tangle of emotions I can't sort through.

But it's real. It exists. She's capable of it.

Just not for me.

Something in my chest cracks. Actuallycracks, like a fissure opening through stone that's been under too much pressure for too long. I don't understand it. Don't want to understand it. But I feel it anyway—this sharp, inexplicable ache watching her show tenderness to my beast while she can barely stand to look at me.

She shouldn't matter, let alone enough to make me feel like something fundamental is breaking inside me while she stands there smiling at Azhrael like he's not a creature of pure destruction.

I shove the feeling down. Lock it away behind the same rigid control I've maintained my entire adult life. Focus on the practical reality in front of me instead of whatever emotional chaos is trying to surface.

Azhrael is settling. That's what matters. The beast who spent all morning resisting me is now practicallydocileunder Lenna's attention, his aggressive posture melting into something almost gentle.

She reaches out slowly, and he leans into her touch. Lets her hand rest against the armored plating along his jaw without flinching. The purring sound that rumbles through him is so lowI feel it more than hear it, resonating through the stone beneath my feet.

He's never done that for me. Not once. Not even when I first bound him, when the threads of control were fresh and absolute.

The observation shouldn't sting. It's practical information. Useful data about beast behavior and response patterns. Nothing personal.

Except it feels personal. Feels like watching something that should be mine respond to her instead, and I hate that I care.

Lenna glances back toward where I'm standing at the barrier edge. "The bridle?"

Her voice is steady, matter-of-fact. Like she's just requesting another supply implement rather than asking for the containment device needed to control one of the most dangerous creatures on Aerasak.

I move forward, bridle in hand, magic still coiled tight around every possible emergency response. Each step deeper into the enclosure feels like walking against current, some invisible force pushing back against my presence here.

Azhrael's gaze cuts toward me, and the docility vanishes.

He doesn't move from Lenna's side—doesn't threaten her at all—but his entire body language shifts back to hostile awareness. That low purr cuts off. His luminous eyes fix on me with unmistakable resentment, and I watch his muscles tense beneath armored plating.

Warning. Clear as any verbal communication.

Stay back.

I stop several feet away, jaw tight, trying to reassess how to approach this. The bridle needs to go on. That's non-negotiable. But Azhrael's making it very clear he doesn't want me close while Lenna's here.

"I'll do it," I start to say, preparing to push past his resistance the way I've done with difficult beasts before.

Azhrael snarls.
