The realization sinks deep into my marrow. He is not parading me as a pet. He is weaponizing me.

"I heard your guard captain." I maintain a perfectly conversational rhythm as we navigate past a cluster of bristling Miou warriors. "He demanded my scourging. He claimed I defaced your sacred vault when I audited the tallies."

"Tharion lacks imagination."

"You did not punish me."

"You found the rot. Punishing you for pointing out the fire is a fool’s errand." His long fingers wrap entirely over my hand, locking my hold on his arm. The deliberate pressure grounds the hostile magic pressing against my spine. "You see the board, Megan. Few in this room share that affliction."

A fierce heat ignites in my chest, completely separate from the suffocating atmosphere of the hall. He sees my intellect as an asset, not an insult. In the brutal hierarchy of Protheka, the High Sovereign is treating a Lowtown stray as his intellectual equal.

The crowd parts with unnatural speed.

Lord Kryven Morvath steps directly into our trajectory. I recognize the face from the outer rings, flaying the flesh from human slaves. His name anchors the nightmares of my people.

Kryven’s rigid posture blocks the aisle. Jet-black hair streaked with stark white falls over an ornate coat of crimson and gold. His magic bleeds into the air—a foul, oppressive pressure that coats the tongue with wet earth and rotting leaves.

"Thosti." Kryven’s upper lip curls. His dark focus slides off Zhetrin and strikes me, a physical wave of absolute contempt. "When the whispers reached the high tables that you had purchased a surface-rat for your bed, I assumed it was a crude jest. Yet here you stand, draped in mud."

Zhetrin’s posture remains unyielding. The ambient air around us drops into a freezing, breathless vacuum.

"Your assumptions hold as much value as your borders, Kryven." The lethal edge of drawn steel vibrates beneath the smooth syllables. "Negligible."

The pale skin of Kryven's neck mottles with rage. "You ignored the Patriarch's summons. You defied the council's direct edict to surrender this filth to the executioner's block beforenightfall. You parade a human in the hall of the Khuzuth. It is treason against our traditions."

A dark, vibrating hum of amusement rumbles through Zhetrin’s chest. The cold, arrogant scoff dismisses Kryven entirely.

"You mistake a suggestion for a shackle. You hold no dominion in my house. You do not issue commands to me nor the high council. Even the Patriarch does not have power over me. I am Zhetrin Thosti."

"She is a violation of the law!" Kryven’s rising volume draws the attention of the surrounding lords. The neutral houses press closer, eager for the bloodletting. "She is livestock! A purchased whore playing in silks she cannot comprehend?—"

I sever my hold on Zhetrin’s arm.

Zhetrin shifts to intercept, a coiled spring prepared to cut Kryven down for the insult, but I step neatly in front of him. I refuse to cower behind the Khuzuth lord. The streets taught me to fight my battles on the front lines.

I plant my feet on the floor, lock my knees, and pin Lord Kryven with a dead, unflinching stare.

"If I am too simple to comprehend the silks," my voice cuts cleanly through the murmurs of the gathered dark elves, "then surely you can explain the current deficit in your flesh-tithes, Lord Kryven."

The hall shuts down Not a single goblet clinks. Not a single silk gown rustles. A human just addressed a high lord without permission.

Genuine shock fractures Kryven's arrogant sneer. "What did you say, beast?"

"I asked about your harvest tallies." I project the statement to the neutral lords circling us. "You ordered your hounds to burn three of House Thosti’s trade wagons. You paid your mercenaries a staggering sum. A sum you financedby aggressively culling the child-labor force in the northern districts."

Kryven’s hand twitches toward the hilt of his blade. "Silence her, Zhetrin, or I will cut out her tongue."

Zhetrin does not intervene. He stands directly behind me, a looming mountain of violence yielding the floor. The predatory heat of his focus burns into my back, watching me work.

"I cast the sums." I breach the space, stepping closer to Kryven. I do not require a parchment; the numbers of the streets are carved into my bones. "You extract five parts of the labor yield from the outer rings, leaving them one part to survive the winter. You claim it enriches your estate. But your mortality rate has quadrupled since the turning of the season."

Kryven sneers, reconstructing his false bravado. "The weak return to the earth. It purges the herd. A concept a mud-dweller cannot grasp."

"A concept a fool uses to bankrupt his own bloodline."

A collective, sharp intake of breath sweeps the surrounding dark elves.

"You are butchering the foundation of your own wealth." My words clip with merciless precision. "By starving the adult laborers to steal their young, your spring harvest will fail. You will lack the physical hands to mine the iron and till the soil. Your yield will drop by half. Next winter, it will drop to nothing. You are burning your own house to the ground just to afford a temporary strike against Lord Zhetrin. It is not a strategy, Lord Kryven. It is financial suicide."
