Without a word, they drop to one knee.
Lowering their heads, they press their right fists against their breastplates in a gesture of absolute submission. They are not merely acknowledging a new Patriarch. They are submitting to an apex predator who just tore down the entire political structure of the Undercity without drawing a blade.
My attention sweeps past the kneeling lords, evaluating the high benches of the neutral houses.
The unaligned nobles remain silent, processing my existence with a mixture of profound awe and deep, calculating terror. I hold the largest standing army in Vhoig. I control the surface trade routes. And I just absorbed the ancestral vaults. My power in the Undercity is now absolute.
Pivoting smoothly, I descend the two steps back to the main floor.
Tharion and the Miou vanguard maintain their tight, impenetrable shield-wall, but the threat has passed. The assassins are dead or fleeing.
Breaching the ring of my warriors, I reclaim the room.
Megan remains exactly where I left her. Her amber irises are wide, processing the monumental shift in the governing architecture of Protheka. The dense indigo silk of her gown stirs as I approach, the oppressive force of my magic pulling back entirely to leave only the fierce, steady warmth of my physical presence.
Her gaze darts between the kneeling nobles and the thick silver crest wrapped around my knuckles.
"You shattered the foundation." Her raspy observation barely carries over the quiet murmurs of the hall.
"We shattered it." Halting mere inches from her fragile frame, the correction serves as a testament to her intellect.
Let the hundreds of Khuzuth lords watch. Let the ancient laws dictate that showing affection to a mortal is a fatal weakness. Defying every sterile rule of my caste, my large, calloused hand cups the back of her neck, my thumb brushing the edge of her honey-blonde curls.
The entire governance structure of the Undercity has fundamentally shifted. The era of starvation and shadow-butchers is dead. The Warlord has taken the crown, and the mortal who held the light stands unharmed at his side.

ZHETRIN
The carved ironwood doors of the war room swing shut, sealing out the frantic, sprawling chaos of the estate. It has been three sun-cycles since the Tribunal Assembly. The execution of Varynth and Kryven severed the rotting head of the old order, but the body of the Undercity is still violently thrashing. My stronghold has become the center of Protheka’s political gravity. Couriers from the outer rings arrive hourly, bearing sealed vellums. The lesser houses, terrified of the vacuum left by the Patriarch’s death, scramble to align themselves with my ledgers.
Commanding the grand map table, I evaluate a massive stack of petitions stamped with the wax seals of twenty minor bloodlines. Tharion stands on the opposite side of the timber, his Miou armor scarred but his posture rigid with victory.
"They beg for your sovereign claim, my lord." Tapping his gauntlet against the stack of vellum, the guard captain presents the demand. "The minor houses petition you to dissolve the High Council entirely. They want you to declare yourself the ruler of the trade districts. A singular Emperor of the Foundries."
Snatching the top petition, the ink practically grovels for the protection of my legions.
"They do not want an Emperor, Captain." The low, rough rumble in my chest serves as a dismissal as I discard the parchment back onto the stack. "They want a new Varynth. They want a singular target they can blame when the harvests fail, and a singular vault they can scheme to steal from when they grow bold."
Tharion frowns, the thick scar along his jaw pulling taut. "You hold the gold and the steel, Zhetrin. If you claim the crown, no house will dare challenge you for a century."
"And in two centuries?" Tilting my chin, my unyielding attention pins him in place. "When my priorities shift? When another shadow-broker decides the power of the Thosti throne is worth a dagger in the dark? The architecture of a singular crown is inherently flawed. It breeds paranoia. It bred the butcher."
Pivoting from the map table, the dark leather of my coat sweeps over the floor. "I will not build my empire upon a trap." The decision hardens into absolute stone within my chest.
A sharp, rapid knock echoes from the corridor before the grand doors open. Lady Nyxira Velmorne steps into the war room, her striking silver hair immaculate, her deep plum eyes shining with sharp, predatory intellect. She is followed closely by Eldric, who carries a fresh stack of blank vellum.
"The neutral fleets are fully operational, Zhetrin." Striding to the table without waiting for permission, Nyxira claims her space. "Without Kryven’s hounds burning the wagons, the southern grain has reached the ports. But the lesser lords are panicking. Without the High Council regulating the tithes, they fear a massive inflation of the flesh-markets. They need a directive."
"They will have one." Retreating to the map table, I pull a fresh sheet of sovereign vellum toward me and draw theiron quill from the brass stand. "I am officially dissolving the ancestral structure of the Patriarch." The lethal authority of my caste coats the air in frost. "House Thosti will no longer dictate the economy of the Undercity through the shadow of a singular throne."
Nyxira’s black-painted fingernails pause against the table. "You are refusing the crown?"
"I am shattering it." The correction flows smoothly. "The governance of the trade districts will be shared. A council built on transparent ledgers, not bloodline purity. I hold the military vanguard. I will secure the borders and enforce the laws. But I will not manage the merchant fleets."
Dipping the quill into the black ink, I sign the first decree and push the vellum across the table toward the neutral noble. "You are appointed the High Arbiter of Economic Oversight." I watch genuine shock ripple across her aristocratic features. "You will regulate the tithes. You will balance the merchant ledgers. If a minor house attempts to artificially inflate the cost of grain to starve a district, you hold my authority to freeze their assets entirely."
Nyxira processes the parchment bearing my sovereign seal. By granting her control over the economy, I am not merely delegating a task; I am inextricably binding the loyalty of the neutral houses to my new order. Tracing my signature, a wicked, brilliant smile curves her lips. "You are an arrogant, terrifying bastard, Zhetrin," she purrs, rolling the decree carefully. "I accept the sum."
