My gaze drops to his leather pauldron. A tear in the armor has been meticulously stitched back together with coarse surface twine.

"She knows your name."

An uncharacteristic reverence bleeds into his rough tone. "She demands it, my lord. She refuses to address any of the perimeter watch by our rank. And she refuses to remain caged in the suite. She navigates the estate."

A mortal, wandering unhindered among the predators of the Undercity, and my own servants are permitting the variable. They are not treating her as livestock.

"Hold your post." I pivot, severing the interaction before the guard can witness the profound fracture in the flawless architecture of my household.

I drag a breath into my lungs. The dense reek of ancient stone, alchemy oil, and old blood around me is instantly obliterated by the bright, distinct trace of dried lavender and surface rain.

The pursuit leads deep into the Zagfer servant tiers, halting before the timber doors of the primary quartermaster’s pantry. I breach the archway, my boots making no sound against the obsidian.

Megan is beside a shelf of sacked grain.

I take her in. The grime of the Lowtowns has been washed away, revealing the striking, vivid reality of her existence. Seven cycles of proper sustenance have already filled the brutal hollows of her cheeks.

She is such a small thing in this cavernous vault. So devastatingly fragile I could span her waist with my bare hands and snap her spine with a single flex. Yet she dominates the space.

She wears a dark linen garment borrowed from the Zagfer servants, but she has cut the hem to her knees to accommodate rapid, unhindered movement. She organizes the space with the sharp, ruthless efficiency of a master merchant.

She scoops exact measures of salted meats, hard cheeses, and coarse grain into a line of durable canvas satchels. Her lips move silently, her focus darting between a slate board and the dense provisions. She is running the brutal sums of survival.

The delicate line of her throat hooks my eyes. A violent tightness grips my chest. It is an instinct I have never possessed—the visceral, predatory compulsion to breach the gloom and press my bare hand against her pulse simply to confirm she is real. I instantly bury the fracture in my control beneath the calculated discipline of my upbringing.

Megan seals the final satchel, slinging the canvas over her shoulder.

I track her departure from the kitchens, slipping through the damp, narrow maintenance corridors winding beneath the estate. She navigates the labyrinth, halting only when she meets the rusted iron grates separating the Thosti foundations from the Undercity catacombs.

Small, filthy hands reach through the rusted bars.

"Quietly." Her hushed tone carries a fierce warmth that fractures the freezing void of the tunnels.

She shoves the provisions through the ironwork.

I recognize the stray from the alleyway. Pellin. He clutches a satchel of meat, his starved frame trembling. Seven other Undercity children huddle behind him in the muck.

"This must last until the end of the week cycle." She delivers strict instructions for their survival. "Do not trade the cheese. Do not let the older boys in the Warrens see you eat. Divide the grain precisely."

"Thank you, Meg."

"Go. Keep to the dark."

She waits until the strays scatter into the catacombs, her back absorbing the weight of an overwhelming, stubborn compassion.

"You are destabilizing the arithmetic of my provisions."

The damp stone shudders with the resonance of my voice. Megan turns, her hand dropping instinctively to the iron key at her belt, fully prepared to wield it as a blade. Upon recognizing her captor, she refuses to flinch, tipping her chin sharply to accommodate my height. I move, dominating the cramped space.

"You have been looting my larders." I close the distance until the bare skin of her toes rests an inch from my polished boots. "You are funding the strays of the surface."

She roots her stance, bracing against me with steady defiance. "Your ledgers will not suffer, Lord Zhetrin."

"Maelis oversees the quartermaster tallies with severity. If a single measure of grain is absent from the weekly sum, she will balance the equation by docking the Zagfer laborers' portions." I pin her with my gaze. "Yet, my steward has reported no deficit. Explain this discrepancy."

"There is no discrepancy." She breaches the buffer zone between us, invading the lethal proximity every other being on Protheka avoids. The infringement drives a volatile, static heat directly into my chest. "I am not pulling from the primary yield. I audited your harvest records in the lower stacks."

"You infiltrated the records room."
