Trinity closes the book and looks up.
“Carter’sList ofSuspicious Happeningssurvived in his little waterproof yellow backpack. It was recovered by Manolis Karamidos on his donkey.”
She pauses.
“The notes Carter made—along with ship’s logs, witness accounts, phone records, CCTV footage—formed part of the evidence that helped explain one of the greatest maritime tragedies of recent history.
“It was the yellow backpack that triggered the first MOB alarm. The body of Theo Pappas—which has never been found—triggered the second.
“Those two events led to a cascade that ultimately sank the brand-new flagship vessel of the Black Orchid Hotel Chain, costing countless lives.”
She turns to a handsome blond teen sitting across the table.
The camera pans over to focus on him.
Trinity:
“Carter, as your grandfather said, all those murders carried out—or initiated—by Vincent Kapoor make sense once you unpack the complex psychology of the man.”
Carter:
“That’s what Gramps did. That was his life’s work—understanding the psychological drivers that helped him profile, predict, and catch killers.”
He leans forward. His hair is tousled by the wind, sun-bleached at the tips. His limbs are long, lean, tanned. He wears a surfer’s T-shirt, his eyes bright blue and alive with an energy that radiates even on screen.
“Gramps solved his puzzle—his crime board—his obsession. But he also gave me my father back. It might not have been a Disney cruise, but that cruise did save our little family.”
He smiles, a little ruefully.
“If we’re staying with the whole theme thing, there’s a deeply evocative Greek word,nostos.
“It means homecoming—especially after a long journey or exile. In Homeric Greek it specifically refers to Odysseus’s return by sea after the Trojan War. It implies a spiritual and emotional homecoming, but more than that—one that is still often fraught with hardship and loss.”
A long pause.
“It implies a transformation.”
Trinity:
“You’re talking about your father? His return home? Becoming a family again?”
Carter:
“It brought all of us back together. The rest of the hard work—that was up to us. All three of us. Compromises. Challenges. We had to put in the time. Family takes effort. But it’s where we belong. It’s been worth it. It’s taught me a lot.”
