My brows furrowed as I turned to Daniel, but he just laughed.

“He means the soda. He’s not a pothead.”

I made my excuses to go to look around the other units while Daniel and Parker talked business. In all honesty, I needed to be away from them for a while. I needed a distraction away from the feelings I was having and the thought that I didn’t want to acknowledge screamed in my mind.

They’re both hot and I am totally imagining what it would be like to fuck them.

Dear God. What the hell was wrong with me? I’d always had a preference for both older and younger guys, rather than ones around my own age. I guessed Parker wasn’t that much younger than me. I allowed myself to think about his body. He wasn’t my relation, so why shouldn’t I admit he was sexy. It was him filling my mind with this stepsister crap and making me feel guilty.

I carried on browsing in a couple stores and purchased a short shabby chic style sundress that came to just above my knees, which would come in handy if this heat continued, and a scented candle for my room, plus some new linens for my bedroom. At the back of a store selling all different kinds of goods, I was surprised to see an over eighteen sign. I followed the arrow on the sign and discovered a display of sex toys and lingerie. I looked around me to make sure I didn’t have Daniel or Parker coming into the store to find me and confirming I was alone I began to look at the toys. I decided it would be a good idea to purchase something to play with while I stayed at the house so that I could enjoy my fantasies and stay satisfied. After comparing the feel of a few vibrators in my hand I finally settled on one called the whisperer. It was named this apparently because it was so quiet which was ideal for where I was staying. It was soft, had a rippled shaft and rounded end and was nine inches in length. The description on the box said it was powerful and waterproof so I could go take a bath and come out feeling even more relaxed!

I quickly purchased the toy and hid it among the linens I had bought before returning to the gallery.

“Man, look at the size of that.” Parker pointed to my shopping bag and I flushed. “Daniel. Don’t let her make the house all girly.”

Daniel laughed. “Let’s go. Put that in the truck and then let’s go get some lunch.”

With my purchases safely put away, I followed Daniel to a quaint looking restaurant where we ordered homemade burgers and fries. They arrived with an accompaniment of onion rings and coleslaw and I realised how hungry I had gotten.

As I took a bite mayo ran out from the bun and slid down my jaw. Daniel picked up a napkin and leaning over wiped my chin.

“Sorry.” I apologized. “I hadn’t realized how ready I was to eat.”

A look passed between us at our closeness and my words. It was full of something I couldn’t or wouldn’t name. I sat back in my seat and had a drink of my soda.

“So. I wanted to explain about your mom.” Daniel said.

“You really don’t have to. It’s passed, hasn’t it? She’s moved on.” I told him.

“She has, but I can’t. Not until I’ve explained.” He added. His eyes were like pools of shiny black oil. They reminded me of an ocean at night.

I nodded, giving him permission to continue.

He rubbed his jaw. “When I first met your mom. She called one of my shops to ask about a tattoo.”

This amused me as my mom hated ink. She thought it made you look like a cheap whore.

“When she requested me in particular, I was wary, as usually, it’s some bored housewife trying to get a hook up with what they assumed was a dirty assed tattooist. She seemed shocked when she met me.”

I could imagine. Daniel was clean cut and didn’t have his own inkings.

“Anyway, she dropped information to me, like I was some dumbass. No doubt usually men sucked it all up, but I had far too much experience of these desperate housewives and just thought she was another. She told me she was divorced and had a seventeen year old daughter who depended on her. Then she put out all this guilt about why was she enquiring about tattoos when she could barely make the rent. She started to cry. I was a little taken aback at that point. Your mom had seemed so confident. Anyway, you know how I am with the homeless and strays. Been like that my whole life. So I told her I had a room she could use while she got on her feet.”

“Big mistake,” I told him.

He sniffed. “Yeah, well yes and no. Because your mom asked me to pretend that we were an item. She didn’t want you to think she was struggling. I was to act as a stepdaddy while she got on her feet.” He laughed. “I even tried to get her work. I thought she was out there trying to fend for herself when actually she was using credit and store cards in my name and maxing me to the hilt. I let her stay because by then I had been introduced to you.” He said. “I thought you needed a stable home while you graduated, but then you didn’t seem to settle and moved in with your friend.”

I looked at my burger. I couldn’t look at him.

“So everything went to crap and I had to sell the business. Your mom abandoned you and I wasn’t ready to let you go. That’s why I kept in touch.”

“Because you wanted to make sure I got my education?”

“Sure.” He said. “And to make sure you were happy.”

His voice drifted off at that point and we carried on eating in an uncomfortable silence.

On our way out we walked past the ‘famous’ ice cream parlor, Creamy Delights, and even though I was bursting full after the burger, Daniel insisted on buying me an ice cream. I settled for a vanilla and coconut cone and we made our way back to the gallery. Parker was busy with a customer so Daniel directed us upstairs where he had his office.
