“I’ll bring you some ideas. I’m thinking we rework the en-suite, expand it out a little, your room can take it. Jacuzzi bath, mood music. A massage chair. That kind of thing.”

“Sounding like music to my ears.”

“Well, the team are about to finish up the new dining room so they can move onto your room next week. That sound okay?”

“That would be fantastic. I need a girly space in this testosterone fueled home.”

I laid on a recliner on the patio and closed my eyes. Listening to the lull of the ocean, I reveled in its melody, even more hypnotic now I had superior hearing. The sun beat down its rays soothing my body and I smiled to myself about how lucky I was. Yes we all had our faults but on the whole we were a good fit. A crazy idea hit me. Why didn’t I propose to the guys? Maybe Carter hadn’t been so wide of the mark after all.

I sat up, my heart thudding. Yes! Why the hell not? We didn’t have to get married straightaway but I could propose to them to cement the fact I was going nowhere and wanted to be theirs for life.

I grabbed my laptop and fired it up and spent an hour looking for what I could order for engagement rings, wondering how I’d get their ring sizes.

While musing the problem I realized that with our wealth a jeweler would come to the house with all the sizes. Triumphant, I was about to place the call when my cell beeped. Leaning over, I grabbed the phone and clicked into the message from an unknown number.

Do you know what your boyfriend was doing while you left him alone?

I pressed play on the video I’d been sent to see Carter standing in a room with a woman with dark hair who I didn’t know. He appeared to be at a party. He was wearing a smart pair of pants and a shirt. The woman looked anguished.

“Why do you let her do this to you?” The woman said.

“I don’t know.”

She touched his arm. “Maybe she’s not the right woman for you? Perhaps the right one was in front of you this whole time?”

I felt sick as I watched their faces come closer together before Carter brushed his lips over hers. This was not on set. I could hear the background noise of people at a party and for once I wished I didn’t have fantastic hearing and could have kidded myself this was an act.

“I shouldn’t have done that. I’m sorry. I have a girlfriend.”

Yes, me, and now you’re breaking my heart.

“I’m not sorry, and where is your girlfriend anyway? She’s not here. Not watching what you are doing. Leaving this most sexy, delicious man all alone. She’s stupid.”

She raised herself on tiptoes and brushed her lips across his and I watched as Carter pushed her against the wall, kissing her with a passion I’d believed he reserved only for me.

Then he stepped back.

“That shouldn’t have happened. I’m sorry.”

The video ended and I pushed my laptop from my lap, and ran with my cell to the nearest bathroom where I threw up every bit of my breakfast.

Then I received another beep on my cell.

I have more gifts for you. Three more. Expect them on the hour.

It was just past one in the afternoon, so whoever it was intended to torture me until two.

At two pm the doorbell rang, and I had to sign for an envelope. Closing the door to the delivery guy, I tore it open, slipping out photos of Smith eating with Leonie, smiling at Leonie, and a picture of him leaning over in the car kissing her.

I threw them on the ground like they might burn me.

Three pm brought another photo delivery. This time to my Inbox. Photos of Jayden kissing another woman—an older woman—outside a hotel. One I knew wasn’t in the locality, so it had been arranged furtively… secretly…?

I didn’t think I could take anymore. Who was doing this? Then it hit me. It had to be Leonie. We had trusted her, brought her back to Carbon Beach. I’d believed her when she’d said she wanted a fresh start, but all along she’d been out for revenge. To ruin us. More painful minutes ticked around until four pm.

Another text. Another video. This time showing me New York City where outside Tiffany’s Flynn clutched onto his ex’s arm as they walked into a neighboring coffee shop.

He’d met Rose and never told me?
