It finally started to sink in and for the first time in ten years, I allowed myself to believe it. Pete was apologetic and not only that; it had never been his intention to hurt me. He took responsibility for the part he played in the prank, but the truth of it was that it hadn’t been about him. It was a dare that some other boys put him up to and because of his age and inexperience, it was the sort of thing he fell into. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time and it was awful what had happened to me. I saw a wave of relief rush over Pete’s countenance and it was then that I could see he had been carrying this around for as long as I had. It wasn’t the same. He wasn’t the victim in the situation, but I knew what guilt felt like and how it could eat at a person’s soul. He didn’t deserve to have that plaguing him anymore. I was happy to give him my forgiveness. It was the first step to us both moving on. Together or not, this was a good place for us to both have a fresh start.
“Strange how things work out, isn’t it?” He mused quietly in the darkness of his bedroom. It would be hours before the sun rose and I had to head back into the office. This had definitely been my busiest weekend of the year and I was glad to have it all behind me.
“I guess you can just never tell how things are going to go. I certainly didn’t expect for this to all end with me enjoying being in your presence,” I said with a smile.
“Oh, I don’t know. I think you are just using me for sex.” Pete said as he pulled me in tight to his chest.
