“No need to thank me, son. I’ll deduct it from your wages when you start here.”

He burst into hearty guffaws. It was so good to hear his voice.

“Well, I’d better go get ready for class. Now, why don’t you make that mac and cheese just twice a week and I’ll not tell Mom?”

“You’re a devil, Garrett James. I do you a good turn and you come back at me with a forked tongue. Now, treat that lady with respect and if it carries on, well me and your mom would love to meet her sometime.”

“Okay, Dad. Speak soon. I love you.”

“Love you too, son. Now get to class.”

I ended the call with a smile on my face. My family thought nothing of stating our feelings for each other and I loved that. I thought about Mer saying she was short of girlfriends and wondered about introducing her to my sister sometime. They were the same age. Then I sighed. I wouldn’t be able to introduce them until I’d told Mer my real age and after that she might not want to see me again. Sighing again, I got up off the bed and drank down my coffee. I changed into some fresh clothes and grabbed my backpack, slipping my feet inside

some chucks. Once downstairs, I paused in the kitchen to pinch a bagel out of Jacob’s hand and then I was on my way to class. I remembered my ball cap as I was leaving, took it from my backpack and pulled it down low once more.

“Is this a Justin Bieber look, or some shit like that?” asked Julian, who had caught me up just outside the door to walk across campus. “You trying to be all cool? Or are you avoiding someone? Either way, you look a dick.”

“It’s the Bieber thing, I’m a Belieber.” I rolled my eyes at him.

“Well at least if Prof. Geller pukes in the wastebasket again you can pull that over your face away from the sight. God, the smell.” He said.

“Yeah, well also, her being in the family way means we will get a tutor change partway through the course too. I hope her replacement will be as good as she is. I need to pass this course so I can start earning. Student life is not for me.”

“At least you get to decide what you want to do. I’m just instructed by my parents, like I’m a robot.”

“That sucks. You will have to get that sorted, Julian. Your life is yours, not theirs.”

“Yeah, well, I’ll get this course passed and see what’s next. I have to know about computers you know. One day I might be in charge of The White House.” He snorted.

We reached the classroom.

“Well, for now, President Murphy, get yourself sat down while you wait for the call from the current President to say he’s ready for you to step up.”

I sat at my desk and unpacked my gear ready for the start of the lesson.

“Looks like her replacement is here already.” Julian commented. “Fuck, she can teach me any time. I’ve never seen her around here before.”

I looked up and froze in horror. How could this be? She didn’t teach this subject. She had no need to travel across this side of campus. Why was she at the front of the class now flicking through papers?

“Good morning everyone.” That familiar voice spoke. “My name is Professor Butler. Professor Geller has been taken ill and won’t be with you this first lesson. However, she has passed me the lesson plans and we can do a revision session, so if you’d like to get your computers fired up.”

It was at that point Julian decided he’d had it with my under the radar persona and he knocked my ball cap straight off my head. “I can’t deal with talking to the peak of your cap, man. I wanna see your face.”

“Could you keep it down over there,” Meredith yelled and then I saw her eyes flit from Julian’s and settle on mine. All the blood drained from her face.

“Excuse me a moment.” She said and then she ran out of the room.

“Fuck, is this one pregnant too.” Quipped Julian.

Chapter 7

Meredith

I ran straight into the bathroom where I threw up that mornings breakfast. My body shook as the mental image of Garrett, sat there in the classroom, came back to my mind.

He was a student.

In a class of eighteen and nineteen years olds.
