My background…or my father’s. It doesn’t matter. I want this done.
“Share it on the screen.” I nod to the TV on the wall as I hit the remote to turn it on.
“We could have done that,” Sara says softly to me.
I chuckle. “I like you close, flower.”
Tom flinches, but he doesn’t comment on our low conversation. He seems to be learning that this isn’t going to end. Ever. Sara is ours.
Tom sets up his laptop to cast to the TV and I look at the spreadsheet. It seems to be intakes of money. There are dates, times, initials, and a lump sum of money. Along with what appears to be a percentage. Maybe a payout?
“It’s probably an accounting of something, but it has no context to tell us anything about it.” I lean back in my chair, wrap my arm around Sara’s waist, and rub my knuckles against her arm.
She melts into me. Without context, it’s useless, but maybe there’s another spreadsheet that fills in the blanks.
“That’s what I thought, but there’s a few hidden columns.” Tom does something on his laptop and a few additional columns show up. “They were locked and Theo had to figure out the password.”
These two additional columns have a purpose. Fuck.
“Is Peter skimming from his own company?” I lift Sara off my lap and walk over to the TV to look at the numbers. That’s the thing about criminals though. There’s very little trust amongst thieves.
Tom stands beside me. “That’s what I thought it might be. If Peter was skimming from his own companies, it’s possible he wasn’t paying his people on the full amounts.”
“That kind of information could topple an empire,” I say. “If that’s what it really is.”
“Or maybe keep Peter from coming back into power.” Tom meets my eyes with a little triumph.
Sara stands next to me and leans into my side. I put my arm around her and rub her shoulder.
“We need more information. Bank statements, offshore accounts. Anything we can find where Peter was depositing funds.” I glance at Tom. “This is really good.”
He nods. His cheeks are still a little red as he sees how close Sara and I are. But he doesn’t say more about it. “I’ll get the files we need.”
Dinner is spent discussing what Tom found and how that could help all of us. We order takeout and all seven of us sit at the table talking it over. Natasha is going to look for more accounts. Her father would have left her a nest egg, but to find that information, she needs to go to her father’s house.
Tom doesn’t want her to go alone. No one wants those two off by themselves. They’ll always be seen as a flight risk, and we can’t protect them if we don’t know where they are. She could go talk to her father, but that’s also a risk no one wants to take.
We end with an agreement to discuss this in the morning. Tom and Natasha go down to their suite and we head up to the living room on the third floor. We stay up for a little while longer and watch some TV. Everyone seems lost in their own thoughts.
None of us wants to separate again, but it’s the only thing that makes sense. Tom needs help with whatever he finds and we can’t leave them unprotected. It doesn’t make sense for all of us to go and abandon our jobs again, but maybe it does, because none of us want to be away from Sara.
Dante rises from the couch and pulls Sara up to give her a lingering kiss. “Good night, pip.”
“Night, boss.”
Wyatt goes next. “Be good, trouble.”
“Yes, sir.” Sara practically salutes Wyatt.
He chuckles and smacks her ass before claiming her mouth. When he pulls away, she sways after him. His dark eyes flash to mine filled with conceit. Cocky bastard.
Sara comes back to the couch and sits between me and Drew.
I lift my gaze to Drew’s.
“I’m not tired.” Drew leans back and strokes his hand across Sara’s shoulders. “If you want me to leave you two to it, I’ll go in my room and fuck my hand to the sounds of you fucking.”
I smirk. “The sound quality would be better in my room.”
