“Then we find the person responsible.”

Rook turned toward the six caskets.

“We find all of them.”

The funeral ended slowly.

Families remained near the graves while military officers offered condolences. Friends embraced one another beneath umbrellas. Men who had served beside Rook’s team stood together in stunned silence.

Rook recognized many of them.

Men he trusted.

Men he loved like brothers.

Men he couldn’t approach.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

Eventually, the crowd began to thin.

Vehicles rolled away one at a time.

Tex’s daughter was the last child to leave.

She walked between her mother and an older man, clutching the folded flag against her chest.

Rook watched until she disappeared inside a car.

Only then did he breathe again.

Fathom opened his door.

“Wait,” Rook said.

Fathom stopped.

A dark sedan remained parked near the far edge of the cemetery.

Too far from the graves.

Engine running.

Windows tinted.

The vehicle had been there when they arrived.

Rook had dismissed it as security.

Now every instinct he possessed tightened.

“You see it?” Sniper asked.

“Yes.”

Fathom glanced toward the side mirror. “Government?”
