Inside my mind, I was screaming in pain and agony beyond what any man had ever known. To put on a little costume and serve my wife and another guy a full dinner just before they fucked each other? No, no, no. I couldn’t do that. It would destroy me.
Or I might lose control and beat the shit out of him the minute I saw him lay a hand on her.
To be her servant like that was something I was utterly incapable of doing.
But that didn’t really matter, did it?
I didn’t have a choice.
Whatever my wronged wife said now goes.
With the heaviest heart I’d ever had, I took the credit card from her. I tried to meet her eyes while I did so, but I couldn’t lift my head. The shame was too great.
“Okay, I’ll do it,” I mumbled pathetically.
“Of course you will,” she said, as if nothing had ever been more obvious.
Yesterday I was rich. Not set-for-life rich, but getting there. Richer than anyone in my family had ever been.
Today, I needed my wife to give me her credit card so I could pick up “something cute” to wear while I served as her fucking attendant.
I never thought it was possible for a man like me to sink this low.
But I had sunk to these sad loser depths. There was no denying it. For as long as I was under this curse, this was my life now. I couldn’t keep fighting it. I had to accept that this was a punishment I could not escape, only endure.
Because I hadn’t even tried to keep it in my pants, this pathetic cuck existence was what my life would be now.
CHAPTER 17
CALLIE
Though Maddox refused to meet our eyes as he cleared the plates, his fury was unmistakable. His shoulders were tight and his movements rigid as he shuffled the last of dinner off to the kitchen. Two weeks ago, I would have thought he looked hot in his little butler tux, but with so much betrayal fresh in my mind, my desire for him had evaporated.
Or at least, that’s what I was telling myself, but I was just thinking about how his broad shoulders looked in well-fitting formalwear, which was maybe residual attraction in another guise?
I reminded myself not to waste energy on such thoughts. Especially when I had a gorgeous, charming man like Lance sitting beside me, so close I felt encircled by his body heat, as we shared the last of a candlelight dinner.
I was relieved Maddox and I had bought a house with an open kitchen that adjoined the dining room. I would not have trusted what my ex might have done to our food if he were ever out of our sight.
He had put together a surprisingly satisfying meal for me and Lance. Mushroom soup and panko crusted baked chicken with roasted potatoes. I certainly had notes (potatoes were a little underdone), but given how inexperienced he was in this area, it was more than I had been expecting.
Lance sighed contentedly. “I’m really impressed with the household staff. I don’t think I’ve ever had a first date like this before.”
“I’m glad you liked dinner. Maddox is early in his probationary period, but he might be worth keeping around.”
I wanted to glance toward the kitchen to see how that landed on him, but before I could, I felt Lance’s energy shift. A new hunger came into his eyes as his gaze shifted from satiated to seductive.
He leaned in ever so slightly, his intention to kiss me clear.
My heart was suddenly racing. This was the first romantic contact I’d have with a man other than Maddox in years.
Earlier this month, I never would have pictured myself attracted to anyone else.
But now I was as hungry for Lance as he was for me. I leaned forward as well.
He placed a strong, warm hand on the back of my neck as he pulled me into him for the most electric first kiss I’d felt since… well… stop thinking of his name.
All the rage I’d felt transmuted into passion as I kissed him back, his tongue sweeping against mine in a way that made my knees weak.
