Now, Hugh would have to relinquish control once again, but this time, in order to keep her.
“I understand your motives, Ellie. You seek to protect those who are unable to protect themselves. Nothing and no one can change your passion for helping the downtrodden. I realize that now.”
She watched him carefully. “Truly?”
“I also understand you, your need to do more with your life.”
“Then you approve,” she asked, her blue eyes large.
“I didn’t say that. You must promise to tell me everything.”
Her eyes narrowed slightly. “Everything?”
“Yes. Nothing you do will be kept secret. I want to be involved.”
“And if I tell you and you disapprove? Will you stop me?”
“I must be honest. I have nothing against the women you seek to aid. I even feel deep anger toward the men who harm them rather than protect them. But if I believe there is risk to you, then I must step in.”
“I see. And what of my association with Violet Lasher?” she asked.
“That must cease.”
“Why? Because you refuse to have your marchioness associate with a renowned courtesan?”
His arm tightened around her. “No. Because she is putting you in harm’s way.”
“You’re wrong. Violet is invaluable. My endeavors would fail without her connections, knowledge, and cunning.”
“You will have your husband instead. Marry me, Ellie.”
She rubbed her temple. “I don’t know. I need time to think. You must understand that your offer is unexpected and—”
He pressed two fingers against her lips. “Think about my proposal, before you make a decision. I can be patient. Meanwhile, I’ll see you home.”
He was confident that if he gave her time to think things through, she would come to say yes. Finally, he’d have everything he’d ever wanted.
