She narrowed her eyes. “I’m trying to figure out what’s going on in your mind, but I can’t tell.”

I waggled my brows. “I’m very mysterious.”

She laughed. “Only at the beginning. Now you’re an open book which is why this is so weird.”

“Don’t worry. All will be revealed shortly.” I wished there was a way of hiding my decision longer, but once I pulled up to the building, she would know I wanted to stay. Good thing that wasn’t the only surprise I had up my sleeves.

“I’m intrigued.” She took my hand in hers, and I headed back downtown.

“How was your day?”

“Good.” She chuckled. “I had four consultations in Sydney’s pool and promised I’d get quotes to the brides by the end of the week, so I’ve got some work to do.”

“Consults in a pool? Huh, that must be nice.”

“Yeah, it was a bit unconventional, but I didn’t mind the change-up. I’m not sure how that will go over with other brides though.”

My chest tightened. This was perfect. She was already settling in better than I could have hoped. “That’s really great. I’m excited for you.”

“Thanks.” I could feel her eyes on me, but I didn’t look over. “Are you going to tell me where we’re going?”

“Of course not, but you’ll see soon.”

She huffed but didn’t press for more. It took less than five minutes to find a parking spot near the building. I got out and hurried around the car to open her door. She stood on the sidewalk and looked around. “Are we getting dinner?”

I smiled. “Later.”

“Then what are we doing?”

“Follow me.” I took her hand and walked into the lobby.

“Welcome back, Mr. Jones.” Dustin nodded to me, then to Dani. “Ms. Glisten.”

Her smile wavered, but she waved as we passed. Once we were in the elevator, she broke. “How does he know our names?”

I didn’t answer her question and instead pressed the button for the seventh floor. Her grip tightened in mine. “What’s going on?”

I led her down the hall to the end unit and pulled out a key. “Take a look.”

She unlocked the door and pushed it open carefully. She peeked in before taking a cautious step.

“What are you doing?” I laughed.

“I feel like something is about to jump out and scare me!”

“Nothing’s going to get you. I just want your opinion on this apartment. I’ve been looking all day, and this one was my favorite.”

Her eyes widened. “You’ve been looking at apartments? Here?”

I tried to play it cool, but I couldn’t hold it in any longer. “Yes, I’m not taking the offer, Dani. I want to stay with the Fury. I want to be here with you and help you build your business with the support of our friends.”

Her mouth dropped open. Then a second later she started laughing and ran to me, throwing her arms around my neck. She kissed me, and I wrapped my arms around her, holding her close. Her lips felt like home. For the first time in … well, a long time, I felt truly happy. It wasn’t just because of her. It was who I was because I met her. She and the team lent their strength when I needed it the most and lifted me out of my pit of grief. They brought me back to life.

When she pulled away, her smile had taken over her face, making the corners of her eyes crinkle. She was so beautiful. I wanted to freeze time at this moment.

“We’re staying.”

I nodded. “We’re staying.”
