“We’re old ladies.”

I was perfectly fine with that title.

The van pulled over a few minutes later, and we got out and turned to cross the street after saying goodbye to the rest of the group. A shake and my bed were calling my name, and tomorrow I’d be spending the day with the love of my life. I mean, Liam. For now, he had to just be Liam.

Chapter 11

Greg texted each of us before eight to ask if we were interested in going to the Bronx Zoo, so we let him know we were heading out to do some shopping. He didn’t need to know we met some college guys to hang out with. I doubted the foundation would approve of that.

But, by nine I still hadn’t heard from Liam.

I wanted to panic. The tightness in my stomach got worse with each passing minute.

“I found a breakfast place we can go to. It’s just a few blocks away.”

I wasn’t sure I could eat, especially with how many sweets we had yesterday, but sitting here wallowing wasn’t helping anyone.

“Sounds good.”

We fell into our normal routine of her leading and me following closely behind until the crowd thinned enough for us to walk side by side.

Gratefully, the line was short. We only had three people in front of us, which was just enough time to decide what to order.

Sophia had been telling me more about her school. To my surprise, she was more of a recluse. I thought her bold personality would put her at the front of the crowds, but she shot that down quickly.

“I’m more of an observer.”

“What a very artist thing to say.”

“I’m not some sort of antisocial kid, I have my group of friends we just tend to hang around the edges of the social workings at school.”

“You mock the cheerleaders, don’t you?”

Her lips twisted and I knew she was keeping back a smile.

“Just because I wave pompoms and try to get the crowd energized doesn’t mean I don’t have anything going on up here.” I tapped my temple with a finger.

“Then explain yesterday.” This time she didn’t bother pretending she wasn’t smiling.

I narrowed my eyes, “Too far, Lodge.”

She burst out laughing while I glared at her from across the table.

I was ready to smear her syrup on her face when my phone lit up. I slid it closer to read the screen and almost choked when I saw it was Liam calling.

“Hello?”

“Hi, April. What are you guys doing?”

I tried to regain my composure but ended up laughing at Sophia, who was still laughing from her previous comment.

“Sorry. We’re just finishing up with breakfast.”

“Where’d you go?”

“It’s a small breakfast place a few blocks away from where we’re staying.” I looked around for a sign but didn’t see anything. “Sophia found it online because it serves gluten-free options.”

“Oh, boy. She’s one of those?”
