I cringed before giving in. “You’re right.”

“If you can figure it out before we get there, I’ll try to limit my teasing.”

“Challenge accepted.”

It took about twenty minutes for us to get to the last exit, and I did figure out where we were headed thanks to the signs in the subway that listed every stop.

“Now you have to play nice.”

Sophia exaggerated an eye roll and groaned. “Fine.”

She led the way up to street level and walked with confidence through the crowd. I really wished I knew where I was going at all times but having her around was just as good. If neither of us knew what we were doing, this trip would have been terrible.

I almost stopped in my tracks before I realized I lost Sophia in the crowd.

If I hadn’t been assigned to room with her, if she didn’t know the city as well as she did, if we hadn’t started off with dessert…I never have run into Liam.

Sophia changed my life.

I smiled at that thought. Not that I would tell her. It would go straight to her head.

Sophia turned around and pointed across the street. “We’re here.”

My eyes lifted and I took in the area. I knew we were headed here, but nothing could have prepared me to see it in person.

“Come on.” She grabbed my hand and lead me past the memorial building and to the first pool.

I gasped. Words left me.

I could feel Sophia standing next to me, but it felt like the world vanished around me. Pictures didn’t do it justice.

We were in the middle of the city, yet it felt peaceful. It was quieter. It felt like holy ground.

A vibration in my pocket pulled me back to the present.

“Hello?”

“Hey. Where are you guys?”

I looked around. “We’re by one of the pools.”

Sophia pointed to the building behind us and mouthed, “One World Trade Center.”

I looked up stunned. Wow. The building was larger than I imagined.

“April? There are two pools.”

“Sorry, we’re right across the street from the One World Trade Center.”

“Got it. We’ll head that way.”

I quickly wiped a tear from the corner of my eye.

“It’s okay. Almost everyone gets emotional here.”

I smiled and blinked rapidly.

“Hey, April.” I turned and my smile grew.
