It wasn’t stopping.

I turned around on my knees and saw my phone lit up on the floor.

The traitor. Our relationship had taken a terrible turn since returning from New York. As if it was the phone’s fault Liam was ignoring me.

I reached across the rug and dragged it back to me.

Liam.

He was calling.

The screen went black and I almost screamed. No! I missed him!

I immediately called him back and held my breath. This wasn’t a joke, right?

“April?”

Oh my gosh. It was really him. “Liam.”

“It’s so good to hear your voice. I didn’t know if you would already be asleep.”

It was good to hear my voice? He could have heard it a week ago if he picked up his freaking phone! I didn’t know what to say. Where have you been the past week? Why the silence? Was your phone broken? He was acting like nothing was amiss.

“I’m up.”

“Good.” I could hear the smile in his voice. I desperately wanted to be mad at him, but picturing him on the phone with a smile meant for me was too much. “I miss you.”

I closed my eyes and wrapped my arm around my stomach. Exactly what I needed to hear.

“I miss you, too.”

“Sorry I didn’t respond to your texts.”

I waited for him to say he met someone new or the long-distance thing wasn’t worth it.

“The director of the show wanted us to get into character by going off all electronics.”

He was joking, right? Who asked college students to give up their phones and computers?

“He felt that if we could go a week without technology, we would better represent our characters and their struggles living in the early twentieth century.”

“Oh, my gosh.”

I didn’t know if I should laugh or scold him for following such ridiculous advice.

“I’m not normally a method actor, but we got bonus points in our class if we ratted out anyone we saw using their electronics. I had to go cold turkey.”

“That’s terrible!”

He laughed again. “It was rough, but the worst part was not getting to talk to you.”

I was glad he felt that way but a little warning would have been nice. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Well, he called an emergency meeting on Saturday night and collected our phones right there. I didn’t have time to let you or my family know I was going off the grid. My mom sent her stylist, who lives in the city, to my apartment to make sure I was alive.”

Good. So I wasn’t the only one he left out of the loop.

“I was about to jump on a plane and do the same.”
