Some best friend he was. I should have called Benjamin. No, he would make me talk to her and work things out. Hunter would have ordered pizza and played video games with me until I passed out. Yeah, definitely should have called him.

“Stop it.” Haley swung her arm back in a halfhearted attempt to smack Reid.

“What? He dug this grave three years ago. It’s about time he has to lie in it.” Reid crossed his arms and leaned against his bed.

“Their relationship didn’t work out. It happens.” Haley looked between me and Reid. “I get why she was mad, but it’s been so long. She can’t still hold a grudge.”

Reid blew out a long breath, and I stared at him, urging him not to say a word.

“Maybe this happened for a reason? Fate forced you guys together so you can both clear the air before graduation.” Haley’s optimism was grating on my nerves.

“Yeah, this could all be happening for a reason. Maybe she has some things she needs to say to you.” Reid’s smirk was growing.

Haley nodded. “I’m sure you do too. You were together for over four years. You both have moved on, but that doesn’t mean you guys don’t have a past. You shouldn’t leave here with her still hating you. I’m sure once you guys talk, it will clear things up.”

Reid chuckled darkly. “You’re right, babe. They do need to talk, but I doubt either of them will leave feeling better after.”

Haley spun to face him. “What do you mean?”

He was ignoring my warning looks. Haley knew a lot about my relationship with Kennedy, at least the high school parts. I didn’t exactly tell her everything that happened when we broke up.

“Sometimes the damage can’t be undone.” He glanced at me, and I realized he wasn’t ignoring my threats. Smart man.

She grunted before turning back to me. “If you can’t change the situation, you have to get it to a point where you can work together. Try to talk to her. An apology can go a long way.”

Sweet, innocent Haley. She really thought me saying sorry could make this all go away. I hadn’t stepped on the back of Kennedy’s shoe and tripped her. I hadn’t forgotten to call or run late for a date. This wasn’t the sort of thing words or chocolate could fix.

I’d messed up. Big time.

Now I was having to face the consequences.

This was stupid.

It would likely end in disaster.

What was I thinking?

I had no reason to be here. The class was on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I had no excuse for lurking around the art building.

What if I did run into her? What would I say? I was in the area? Most of the classes for my major were in the history building, halfway across campus.

There was a really good coffee spot right outside, and sometimes I ventured over here if one of the guys had a craving for something better than the lukewarm, sad coffee in the dining hall near our dorms.

I didn’t really care. I only drank the stuff if I needed to stay awake.

I could offer to get her one. She was still drinking her favorite, iced caramel lattes, since Lauren brought her one yesterday.

She would probably think I poisoned it.

How did we get to this point? In high school, we were each other’s person. Their number one. Best friend. Confidant. Lover.

What happened?

Oh yeah. I royally screwed up.

But did I regret it? Could I?

It was impossible to deny that things had worked out for me. Considering the what ifs would only drive me crazy.
