He let out a breath and laughed. “Sounds good. I’ll bring pizza and chocolate for the popcorn.”

Oh, he knew me so well.

“Was that Jay?” Aubrey was still looking at the TV, pretending she hadn’t been listening to our conversation.

“Yeah, he saw the news and wanted to check on us.”

“How thoughtful.”

I stared at her profile, trying to figure out where she was going with this conversation.

“Yeah. He’s bringing pizza so we can have a movie day.”

She smirked and eyed my cereal bowl.

“Apparently he can handle a late night better than me.”

“You’re pretty much the worst morning person, but you know what they say: opposites attract.”

I glared at her which only made her laugh.

“We’re just friends, Bree.”

“Friends that have been on several dates in the past few days.” She raised her eyebrow as if that proved her point.

“Breakfast and a dinner for his dad. Neither of which are romantic.”

“The best relationships start with friendship, Mac.”

I tried to focus on the TV and not her gloating expression. She might think she had it figured out, but she was missing one huge piece.

“He told me last night that I’m his best friend. The one person he knows he can rely on.”

Aubrey turned on the couch to face me. “Mac! That’s great!”

I shook my head and sighed. “Then he asked me for advice. For a girl he’s interested in.”

She sat up straight and frowned. “What?”

I shrugged. “He likes this girl but doesn’t know how to make the first move. He asked me what he should do; like a friend would ask another friend.”

“What a moron! And now he thinks he can come over here and watch movies like everything is normal?”

She was getting more upset than I was. “Yeah, because we’re friends. Nothing’s changed.”

“But you guys look so cute together! You’ve been so happy lately, and I thought it was because of him.”

“I have had fun being around him. I’ve seen a different side of him lately, but he’s not interested. No big deal.”

There was no way Aubrey could believe my words, I sure didn’t. I was devastated. I really thought Jay and I were moving toward taking the next step, but he threw that idea to the ground and stomped on it last night.

“That boy needs to get some sense knocked into him.”
