“Okay, good. I’m pulling in right now, and I didn’t want her to see me.”

“You’re clear. I’ll head down now.”

I hurried down the stairs and slid into the passenger seat of his BMW. The door was barely closed when he accelerated out of the parking lot. I put on my seat belt and laughed.

“She’s not coming home for four hours minimum.”

“You never know. She could have forgotten something.”

“Something that a hundred other dancers would have with them that she could borrow?”

He kept him eyes on the road and ignored me. “Maybe.”

I rolled my eyes and laughed. “Where are we headed?”

His grip on the steering wheel tightened. “I’m not sure.”

“How much thought have you put into this?”

He clenched his jaw. “I’ve put in a tremendous amount of thought into marrying Aubrey. It’s picking out the stupid ring I haven’t thought about.”

“Okay. Do you have a price range in mind?”

“Whatever will make her happy.”

I smiled at how sappy he was. Price wasn’t something that he had to worry about since his and Brandon’s, Aubrey’s brother, business took off several years ago. Their tech company was doing very, very well. That was something I could have fun with.

“There’s one place I know she’ll love. She’d never be able to say no.”

He shot me a look before returning his gaze to the road. “You think she’ll say no?”

“Of course not.” I patted his shoulder. “But it never hurts to pad your odds.”

Thirty minutes later, we were parked in front of one of Aubrey’s favorite places in the world. No, not Disneyland. Tiffany and Company.

“Are you ready for this?”

Carter nodded, so I led him into the store. We were greeted first by security then a well-dressed woman with her hair in a French twist.

“Welcome to Tiffany and Company.”

I smiled and noticed Carter’s face suddenly looked ghostly. Oh no. He was panicking.

“It’s okay. We’re just looking.” He silently nodded and followed me to the counter.

“Hi, we’re looking for engagement rings.”

The woman smiled and looked between us. “Oh, how wonderful. My name is Kate, and I can show you our collection.” She led us through the store to a separate room.

Diamonds. Everywhere.

Aubrey would be in heaven.

Kate stood behind the first counter and waited for us to stop gawking.

“Do you have an idea of what you’re looking for?”

My smile grew. I could have a lot of fun with this, but judging by Carter’s current hunched shoulders and pale face, he wouldn’t handle it.
