He nodded against my head and kicked the door closed behind him. He held me like that until we heard my phone chirp.
I pulled back and looked at my phone. “Aubrey said she’s been gone all day.”
“I figured, but I just wanted to make sure.” He looked around the apartment like maybe the person was still there. “The door was locked when you were in the bath?”
I’d come home and went straight to the kitchen. I had to have locked it, I always did.
“It was locked when I answered it for you.”
“That’s not what I asked.” His eyes were kind, but I knew he was just as worried as me.
“I don’t specifically remember locking it, but I always do.”
“Come on.”
He tugged me to the couch and sat before pulling me onto his lap and wrapping his arms around me again.
“I’m sorry you got freaked out. There isn’t much we can do unless something was taken.”
Nothing looked out of place and I didn’t notice anything gone, so I shook my head.
He pulled me tighter against him and set his chin on my head. “I’ll stay here tonight to make sure no one comes again.”
I nodded against his chest so grateful he came. He made me feel safe. Like nothing could go wrong when he was with me. If there was anything going on, Jay could fix it.
“Who do you think it was?” It would have made more sense for him to ask me the question, but I wanted him to do the thinking for me for a minute.
“It could have been anyone. Someone that thought they were going to another apartment. Maybe one of your neighbors looking for something?”
He didn’t say it, but I could only image it being the attacker. Someone bad or dangerous. I appreciated his less scary ideas, but it didn’t seem right to me.
Why would a neighbor walk in?
If they had the wrong apartment, that would make a little more sense. They walked in and didn’t see their friends, so they looked around for them. They heard me call for Aubrey and left.
Yeah. That was a logical explanation.
Minus the fact that I could have sworn I locked the door.
