After being in the water for almost two hours, we each rode a final wave in and collapsed on the sand.
My arms fell like weights to my side. A giggle escaped my lips.
“What’s so funny?”
I attempted to lift my right arm and failed, again.
“I can’t move.”
Feeling his eyes on me, I turned my head to face him.
“How long has it been since you’ve gone out?”
I closed my eyes and tried to remember. “I’ve only been out once since we went.”
“Wow. No wonder you’re feeling it.”
I groaned. “I’ll never go that long again.”
“The perfect solution.”
“Don’t you need to get back to the office? Your lunch break has to be over by now.”
“Nah, I told Brandon I was heading out for the day.”
“Must be nice.”
“Says the girl that’s out here with me instead of in class.”
“I was done already. I’m just avoiding homework.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
We lay in silence, enjoying the heat of the sun until my stomach growled.
“Geez, do have a lion hidden in there?”
I joined in his laughter and finally sat up. “Apparently it’s dinner time.”
“I know just the place.”
We gathered our things and I followed him back to our cars where we stored our boards. I moved to the driver’s side of my car but Austin stopped me.
“We can walk.”
I narrowed my eyes and looked around. We were surrounded by homes.
“Trust me.”
“Fine.” He led me down the street and just one left turn later we were in front of a small Mexican food drive-thru. There wasn’t a dining area. People walked up to a window that faced the street and ordered. There were a few benches, but for the most part, people were standing and eating while talking with their friends.
“How have I never noticed this place?”
Austin shrugged. “You didn’t know where to look.”
We joined the line and just a few minutes later I was devouring some of the best carne asada tacos I’d ever had. “This is amazing.”
Austin nodded while chewing.
