That described most of the guys at CU.
“Anything else?”
I closed my eyes and focused on what I could remember. The bat was coming at me. I ducked. I turned and watched him come closer.
“He was Caucasian.”
Larson nodded, and Maynard wrote it down.
“Nothing else. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize. That’s the most concrete information we have on the suspect.”
“I just wish I saw more.”
“Well, we’re grateful for what you gave up and that you are unharmed. We’ll let you rest, and we’ll be in contact if we have any additional questions.”
“Thanks.”
Aubrey stood and walked them out. Once she was back on the couch, she let out a sigh.
“You scared me to death, Mac.”
“I’m sorry.”
“No apologies. Just don’t ever do it again.”
“I’ll try.”
“Good. I’m going to do some homework. If you need anything just shout.”
She closed her bedroom door behind her, leaving me alone with Jay.
“I was so scared, Mckayla. I saw you running, and I got to you as fast as I could. I think I knew what had happened even before you told me.” He sucked in a breath. “It could have been so much worse.”
I relaxed into him and pulled his hand into mine. “Thank you for being there. I don’t know …”
“I don’t want to think about that. I was there and you’re safe.”
“How did you know I needed you?”
He let out a small chuckle. “I didn’t. I just hadn’t heard from you, so I was coming by. I never thought I would walk up to that.”
I turned until I was face to face with him. “You saved me.”
I didn’t wait for his response before slipping my hands up to cup his face and bringing him down to meet my lips.
