“Pretty good.” I had a bad ankle sprain last season, but thankfully it healed properly and hadn’t had any lasting effects.
“Glad to hear it.”
“Are you feeling a difference with having to work with the women’s team? Do you have a lot more to do?”
He lifted his chin, seeming to think it over. “Not yet, but that might change once they start having games. I’m pretty excited about it, actually. There was talk about hiring a second trainer for them, but I asked that we wait at least through this season.”
“Why?” It seemed like a lot for one person to handle.
He cracked a smile. “I’m a bit protective of this program. I didn’t want them hiring someone on short notice and it not being a great fit.”
I shook my head. He probably just didn’t want to have to share this room with someone.
He checked his watch. “How are you feeling now?”
I did a quick inventory of my body and started to lift myself out. “Better.”
“Good, now get out of here.” He twisted a small towel and snapped it at me.
I laughed and picked up my gear before waving over my shoulder. I was one of the only guys left, so I quickly pulled on sweats and put my stuff in my locker before heading to my room.
Benjamin, Reid, and Ethan were spread out on the two beds, playing a video game.
“Cheater!” Ethan roared and punched Benjamin in the arm.
“That wasn’t me.” Benjamin shoved him with his shoulder.
I dropped my duffel bag under the spot Reid was sitting and joined him on my bed.
“You want in on the next round?” Benjamin asked.
“I’m okay.” I had an assignment I needed to finish tonight and didn’t want to put it off for after dinner.
“Your partner’s number is on that paper.” Reid nodded toward my desk. I reached over and grabbed it to find the phone number written in Coach Payne’s messy writing.
“That’s it? I don’t even know who this is.”
Reid smirked. “Yeah, sorry. He was super busy, so he just scribbled that down and handed it to me.”
I guess it didn’t matter. I could just ask, but it wouldn’t make much of a difference since I didn’t know any of women well. I sent the number a text to let her know we would be heading the park clean up.
“Coach Hiller should have sent out emails with the details by now.” Benjamin didn’t take his eyes off the screen while smashing one button over and over again.
My email app had one new notification, so I checked that and read through all the information. There would be two representatives from the city’s parks and recreation department, and they would be providing everything we would need, including gloves. All we had to do was show up at the park by eight, and they expected us to be done by noon.
That was fine by me. Four hours, and I could forget about this requirement forever.
I groaned at the last line of the email. Hiller said we had to meet with our partners once before the day of the event to make sure our entire list was notified, and to arrange transportation if needed. Great. This was starting to feel like a painful group project.
My phone buzzed with a reply.
Unknown: Sounds good.
That was it? No mention of her name?
Hunter: We have to meet up before. What day works best? Also, I didn’t get your name, just your number.
I watched as three dots appeared, and waited.
