Until I saw Shaw waiting for me.

“You don’t have to stay.” I got out of the wheelchair and crossed the room to the bed with the help of the nurse.

“Oh, now that you’ve got McDreamy or whatever, you don’t need me?”

I wasn’t sure what threw me more, the reference or his jealousy.

“He’s more of a McSteamy.” Because that was obviously the point of this conversation. I didn’t know he’d seen my doctor, since I only caught a glimpse of him before the screening.

“Whatever, maybe I should go.” He didn’t move, but he didn’t look at me either.

“I’m sure Matthew or Karly will be here soon. One of them can take me back.”

He nodded but stayed still. “You don’t like me.”

I nearly balked at the statement. He couldn’t know that. I’d done nothing to reveal my true feelings. Right?

“I don’t know you,” I countered as I tried to shift in the bed but failed since I couldn’t use my right hand.

“No.” He stood and offered me a pillow to prop up my arm before staring back at me. “You don’t, yet you’ve come to some conclusion about me already.”

His actions and his words so completely opposed each other I had no idea what to think. I wanted to stomp on his foot or scream or tell him exactly who I was and that my conclusion was based on years of torment. But I stayed calm and met his stupidly stunning hazel eyes that flickered with flecks of gold.

Gold? No. Stop.

No flattering thoughts of him were allowed.

“What does it matter what I think, Shaw?”

His eyes narrowed, and I realized my mistake. People here didn’t call him that. I only heard his captain say that a handful of times, and it was usually after he didn't respond to his first name.

“It doesn’t.” He stepped back and crossed his arms. “Frankly, I don’t care if you like me or not. I just don’t want you going around and tainting the rest of your team’s opinion of me before they have a chance to get to know me for themselves.”

This was so typical of him. Once again, he pushed me to the side. Dismissed me completely while turning his attention to my friends.

“Stay away from them.” I saw the trail of broken hearts he left behind back home. I didn’t want to relive that.

“Why? Are you jealous?” His stupid brow rose in challenge.

I snorted. “No. Not even a little bit.”

That seemed to confuse him, which made me smile.

“What’s your problem?”

You! I really wanted to just lay it all out there for him, but I refused. The lame part of me that took offense to him not remembering me wanted to find ways to get payback for that. I wasn’t someone for him to step on and overlook.

I wouldn’t let him talk down to me or make me feel small. Not again.

Too bad I hadn’t heard anything about him and his reputation here. I didn’t know if he still enjoyed luring girls in just to dump them the next week or not.

What if he changed?

Well, his attitude toward me certainly hadn’t. That was actually kind of strange.

What was it about me that brought out the worst in him?

“What’s your problem with me?” I didn’t raise my voice or even add any snark. I genuinely wanted to know.
