“Can I talk to you?” Hunter jumped out of the seat and pulled my doctor into the hall. They didn’t close the door all the way so I caught a few of their words but they didn’t make sense.
“Good stuff.”
“Adrenaline…coming down.”
“Stressed.”
“Placebo effect.”
The door swung open again, and Hunter offered a half smile. “So, ready to go?”
“Where’s Coach?”
“I sent Matthew a text, letting him know it was a sprain, so they’re waiting for you at the arena. I’m going to take you back.”
“Oh, fine.” He helped me stand and I closed my eyes for a second, but when I opened them, we were in the truck. “Whoa.”
He reached over, pulled my seatbelt across me, and clicked it in place. “I’m pretty sure he just gave you ibuprofen. Why are you acting so weird?”
I shrugged and let my head drop back.
“So what did you mean before? You said something about Silver Vikings?”
“Yeah, that was the first team we were on.” I looked out the window and noticed we weren’t moving. “Why aren’t you driving?”
“Because I want to figure out what’s going on. You played on the Silver Vikings?”
“Yes, you goose. I was number ten, and you were five.”
His eyes widened. “Right. How did you know that?”
I rolled my head to look at him. “Because it was my first number. Of course, I remember.”
“I don’t …” He stared at me for a really long time. “How?”
“How what?”
“How do I not remember you?”
I laughed. Well, it was more of a loud bark. “Maybe it wasn’t as traumatic as it was for me.”
“Traumatic?”
“You were my friend. We carpooled together. Then you moved up to the next team, and you stopped being my friend. You were so mean. You teased me. Called me ugly. Told me girls didn’t belong in hockey, and I should get different skates.”
“What?” He looked so silly with his brows all bunched together.
I reached out and poked the wrinkles.
He slapped my hand away. “Stop that.”
I closed my eyes again. A nap sounded really nice. I liked naps. I didn’t get them very often anymore. Classes ruined it. Stupid school. Why wasn’t I done yet?
“Presley!”
I jerked and looked around. Did we hit something?
“I need you to pull yourself together for five seconds and answer me.”
