But I couldn’t stop thinking about Presley and everything she’d said.
On the third night of lying wide awake in bed as the minutes passed midnight, I gave up and headed to the arena. I figured at some point the exhaustion would catch up to me, but tonight was not it. I pulled on shorts and a bobcat T-shirt before slipping on shoes and heading out without waking up Benjamin.
Technically, we weren’t supposed to train alone. Having someone around in case you got hurt was important, but I wasn’t planning on getting on the ice, and if I managed to injure myself while lifting weights, then I deserved to suffer alone since I’d done something stupid.
I wasn’t planning on going crazy and maxing out. I just needed to move and distract my tired brain from thinking about her.
I unlocked the backdoor and shut it behind me before heading down toward the tunnel and into the weight room.
A light was coming from under the door. Was someone else here, or had the last person to leave forgotten to turn it off? I really hoped for the latter. I wasn’t in the mood to talk to any of the guys.
I went inside and relaxed when I didn’t see anyone. I crossed to the cardio section to warm up on a treadmill. I started with a fast walk to get my legs warm before increasing the speed to an easy jog as I put my headphones in and started my favorite playlist.
The heavy bass set my running pace, and I turned up the music until it took all my attention.
A noise beyond the music was almost enough to distract me, but when I looked around, I didn’t see anything. The door was still closed, so I brushed it off until my shirt was tugged.
I screamed. I’d admit it to anyone who asked, because it was one of the most terrifying moments of my life.
I thought I was alone in the middle of the night, but when I slammed the stop button and turned around, Presley freaking Stone was glaring at me with her hands on her hips.
Yeah, that tragic-looking girl was long gone.
She was gorgeous, even when her eyes were full of rage.
“What?” I bit out. She might be hot, but my heart was still trying to return to a normal rhythm.
“Could you try to be a bit quieter?”
Quieter? I was running. What did she want me to do? Tiptoe?
She continued to glare at me while I took the chance to take her in. She was wearing black leggings and a tight black tank top. Once I was able to drag my eyes away from her body, I noticed she was sweating. Way more than me.
“How long have you been here?”
“An hour. A quiet, peaceful hour until you marched in here and started pounding like a two-ton ogre.”
How had I missed her?
Wait, an ogre? “What are you talking about? I was just running.”
“Yeah, and thanks to your atrocious form, the entire campus is aware.”
My form? Nothing she was saying made sense, then again I was sleep deprived.
“What’s wrong with my form?”
Her head snapped back. “You don’t know? No one has ever said anything to you? I find that really hard to believe.”
I glared at her. “I’m usually on skates.”
“We’re all so very grateful for that. Although, I am surprised you have the finesse necessary to do that.”
Who was this girl?
“Move over.” She pushed me off the treadmill and started it, quickly speeding it up to run. She pointed at her feet. “Listen.”
I folded my arms across my chest and waited for her to prove her point so we could move on and I could finish my workout in peace.
