The guys weren’t even at the bottom before Haley leaned forward to see past Kennedy. “It’s been a while, Hunter.”
“I’ve seen you like ten times this week.”
She waved that off. “But we haven’t really talked.”
Because of my diligence. I was already regretting this slip. Was it too late to run after my friends?
“How have you been?” Kennedy asked like she was a trained professional I should be revealing my thoughts and emotions to.
They were sneaky. They lured you in, made you feel comfortable, then bam! They pulled your secrets from you like witches.
“Good. I’ve been good.”
Haley narrowed her eyes. “Benjamin said you haven’t been sleeping and keep sneaking out in the middle of the night.”
“Where do you go?” Kennedy tagged in.
There was no use in lying. They either already knew or had guesses. “The arena. When I can’t sleep, I go work out and it helps me fall asleep.”
While that was not only a perfectly acceptable answer but also the truth, they didn’t seem satisfied.
“Alone?” Kennedy asked.
“Yeah, I sleep alone.”
Her eyes narrowed. “Do you go to the arena alone?”
“Yes.” That wasn’t a lie. I did go alone. She didn’t ask if I was alone while I was there.
“Why haven’t you been sleeping?” Haley asked, seeming genuinely concerned, although I wasn’t sure why she would care. “Is anything going on?”
I shook my head. “Not really. It’s probably just stress.”
“Stress over what?” Kennedy continued to prod.
Did I agree to play a hundred questions with them at any point?
“Scouts coming. The draft. Ending this season with a championship. The same thing as all of the other guys.”
“But none of them are losing sleep,” Haley pointed out, and Kennedy nodded.
Why did I always feel like these two knew something I didn’t? Either they were mind readers or they had spies throughout campus, because they always knew when to press certain topics.
I hadn’t mentioned anything about Presley to any of the guys, so they couldn’t have heard something from them.
They could sense it, or smell my fear.
But I did want to talk to someone about what I should do about Presley, if anything. I didn’t think my friends had the right answers. Maybe their girlfriends would.
“I was recently reminded of some things I did growing up and the effects those actions had on others.”
“That’s vague.” Haley tilted her head. “We need more information.”
Of course they did. They would get all the details out of me eventually, so I might as well lay it all out before the guys got back. I needed outside perspectives, too.
“One of the new girls on the women’s team is someone I knew from back home. We started out together when we were little and were friends until I moved on to the boys’ only team. After that, I guess I teased and bullied her quite a bit.”
“You guess?” Kennedy’s brows lifted.
