“Why not?”
“Because then she'll think you want to date one of them.”
She rolled her eyes. “I'm pretty sure that Karly knows that I'm not into any of the guys.”
I pointed at her. “Exactly, so she's going to think it's weird. She's probably going to assume you're asking for me.”
She held up her hands. “I'm just saying that I've never heard of a rule against it.”
“Well, just because there isn't a rule doesn't mean it's not a bad idea. It just means they haven’t had a reason to make it official yet.” I blew out a huge breath. “Plus, he has too much to focus on. This is the most important semester of his life, and he doesn't need distractions.”
“So, you’re going to wait until after he graduates? After he gets a contract?” she pried.
“No. I'm not going to say anything at all.”
“I think you're going to regret that.”
I probably would, but I would regret it more if I put myself out there just to be rejected. I wasn’t sure I could recover.
“So you're just going to leave things as they are? Star-crossed lovers never meant to be?”
“We’re not star-crossed, and we're not lovers. Don't over-romanticize this.”
“I'm not. I just think it's clear that there's something going on between the two of you, whether or not either of you wants to admit it.” She got a strange look on her face, and I waited for her to say something else, but when she didn’t, I reached over and tapped her shoulder.
“What are you thinking?”
“What do you mean?” she challenged.
“I don't trust whatever is going on in your head right now.”
Her smile grew. “Don't worry about it.”
“Well, now I have to worry.”
She shushed me and turned off the lights. She was up to something, and I would figure it out, eventually. Before she did something to embarrass me or Hunter, or both of us.
Chapter 16
Hunter
Real life set in like a slap to the face.
My dad didn’t help.
He didn’t show up to my game. He sent a text on Sunday morning saying he’d been busy and couldn’t rearrange his plans. I was fine leaving things at that, but he called when we got back to the dorms and I ignored it. He called back immediately, which was way out of the norm, so I answered in case it was an emergency.
“What’s wrong?”
He let out a laugh, “I can’t call my son unless there’s something wrong?”
He could, but he didn’t.
“I just got back, and I need to unpack. Is there something you needed?”
Benjamin frowned and pointed at the door. “I’ll be back in a few.”
I nodded. I didn’t care about privacy. Not when it came to my dad, but I doubted he wanted to hear this either.
