Oh, that was a good, good question. “He had a coat on over dark pants. I can’t remember if they were jeans or slacks.”
“Just mirror him and put on some black jeans, a sweater, and a coat. At least you will be on the same page as him.”
That sounded like a better plan than anything I’d come up with, so I quickly switched out my pants and pulled on an oatmeal-colored sweater and my black pea coat. I ran my hands through my hair before posing in front of Chris.
“What do you think?”
“You look marvelous, darling. Now go have fun.” She held up my bag as I walked past it and then hurried me out the door.
Hunter was still leaning against the railing when I made it back down to him. “All set?”
“I think so. Is this better?”
He looked me over and smiled. “Come on.”
We went outside to a car that was parked in front of our house. “This is us.” He opened the passenger door for me.
“Whose is this?”
“It's Kennedy's. She came up for a visit with Ethan and is letting me borrow it for the night.”
“Oh, that's really nice.”
I’d only met Kennedy a handful of times, and it was usually in passing in the dorms or at the games. She was really sweet and totally in love with Ethan. I never would have guessed that they had only been together for a few months. They seemed like the kind of couple that had been together for a lifetime.
“Are you going to tell me where we're going, or do I still have to wait?”
“You're going to have to wait it out.” He took my hand as we pulled away from my street.
Luckily, I wasn’t left wondering for long. It was a short drive to the restaurant I'd never seen before.
I leaned forward, looking for a sign. “What is this place?”
“It’s my team’s secret. We're all obsessed with it and try not to tell too many people so that it doesn't get too popular. We don't want to have to wait in line.” He got out and hurried around to open my door.
“Well, if it's so good, wouldn't you want to tell other people about it? What if they go out of business because you guys didn’t share the love?”
He took my hand as we walked toward the door. “The guys and I plan on revealing it as soon as we graduate.”
I held back a laugh. Of course, they were. “That’s pretty sneaky.”
He winked and led us inside to the darkened space, and like he said, we were immediately seated at a secluded table near the back of the restaurant. The hostess set down menus, and I finally got my first glance of what this place was called. DiMaggio Italian Family Restaurant was sprawled across the front. I quickly opened the menu, excited to see what they had.
“Is this just pizza, or do you recommend pasta?”
Hunter didn't bother opening his menu. “Everything you can get here is delicious, but I usually get a calzone with as many meats as they can fit.”
That didn't sound all that appealing, so I continued to look through the menu. By the time the waiter came over with two glasses of water, my mouth watered at the thought of their lasagna. We placed our order and were soon alone.
I glanced around and realized that the other tables were so far apart that we would have to talk quite loudly to be overheard. This might be the most privacy we'd ever had, outside of his dorm room.
I leaned forward with my elbows on the table. “I feel like we're breaking some sort of rule.”
He moved in as the corners of his lips tucked up. “I think that says something about me as a boyfriend if you think going to a restaurant is sneaking around.”
“I guess I've just gotten used to staying on campus. We are lucky there are options of things to do, but every once in a while, it’s nice to get away.” Not that I did that much, outside of road trips with the team.
“That’s true. I never really noticed not having a car since so much of my life revolves around classes and the arena. I don’t have much time to go anywhere else, so it’s weird to remember that there’s a whole world outside of our little bubble.”
