Once we reached the edge, Karly and Chris moved aside.

“I don’t feel comfortable carrying her farther with skates on,” Karly said and Chris nodded.

I appreciated their honesty. I’d rather they admit it now than drop her in a few seconds. The medics caught up to us and stood there awkwardly until Matthew directed them to fill their spots.

“Come on.” Matthew shot me another irritated look. He was going to have quite the complaint to file later. I kept up with them as they loaded her into the waiting ambulance.

I tried to climb in with her, but one of the inept medics put his hand up. “Only one can ride along.”

I looked at Matthew, and he patted my shoulder. “I’ll take care of her.”

I stared at the doors as they slammed shut. What was I going to do? I couldn’t stay here. I had to follow her.

“Shaw!” I turned to see my coach and Jarry running toward me. “Come on.”

I followed them to a school vehicle, and Weston jumped into the driver's seat. We were only a few seconds behind the ambulance, but I still couldn’t breathe. I wouldn't until I saw her eyes and heard her tell me she was okay.

My stomach rolled as I realized what this meant. The nerves, panic, and pain in my chest meant something much more.

I loved her.

I was in love with her.

It wasn’t some dumb chemical reaction. It was inexplicable and overwhelming and wonderful and terrifying. And I needed her to wake up so I could tell her.

Chapter 21

Presley

Pain was the first thing to pull me from the darkness.

Then the beeping.

A calm, soothing voice.

I couldn't open my eyes. I couldn't move my arms or legs.

My first instinct was to panic, but as the noise around me grew louder, the memory of what happened came to the surface of my mind.

I was hit.

But I didn’t hear the normal sound of an arena. I didn’t feel the ice beneath me.

The weight of my pads and the tightness of my skates told me I was still in my gear.

I wiggled my toes and felt some relief. I wasn't paralyzed. But for some reason, I couldn't move any of my limbs.

Finally, after trying over and over, I was able to open my eyes. Light immediately assaulted me, so I snapped them shut and gradually peeked until I was able to make out Matthew leaning over me.

“Presley? Can you hear me?” That was the soothing voice I heard. It was him.

I groaned.

“Presley, you’re in the ambulance. Do you remember what happened?”

I tried to move my head toward him but something stopped my movement.

“I was hit.” I was able to mumble out the words.
