“Yes,” we said as one.

“Good.” He turned and marched up the rest of the stone pathway to the front door and knocked loudly.

I shared a look with Ethan while we waited. This was new territory for all of us. All we had to do was play nice, but I had a feeling it wouldn’t be easy. We had a tendency to make things complicated.

Chapter 3

Presley

Pounding on the door nearly made me jump out of my skin. I stared at the door, wondering if I had to answer it or if I could hurry up the stairs and pretend I hadn’t heard. It felt strange opening the door to a house I lived in with so many other girls. The odds were pretty much zero that it was for me, so ignoring it seemed acceptable. It could be someone else’s problem.

“Can someone get that?” Karly shouted from somewhere upstairs.

Did I have to?

No one else was around, which meant that: one, there were no witnesses if I bailed, and two, I was the only one here to answer.

The knock came again, and I groaned before taking the steps to reach the handle and face whoever was persistent enough to hang out.

A group of guys stood in front of me. It took a few seconds to recognize the one in the front. He was captain of the men’s team. I glanced at the others, one had a man-bun that looked obnoxiously good on him, and another had the whole tall, dark, and handsome thing going for him. Was the whole team this attractive? Then I noticed the familiar Greek god looking apprehensive about being here.

“Can I help you?” I tried to keep the annoyance out of my voice, but the narrowing of the captain’s eyes told me I failed.

He quickly changed his expression to a warm smile, but I didn’t believe it. “We’re here to talk to all of you.”

“Not all of us are here. The freshmen live in the dorms, and I think some of the girls went out.” None of them made a move to leave. I hated awkward interactions like this. It was why I didn’t want to open the door. I didn’t know what to say, and they were all staring at me like they were waiting for a specific answer. “Maybe you could come back later?”

“Is Karly here?” Captain asked. “We can at least tell her what’s going on, and she can let the rest of your team know.”

Before I could answer, footsteps sounded down the stairs like a stampede, and Karly appeared at my side. “Hi, Benjamin, what’s up?”

I moved back, letting her take over.

“We’re here to invite your team to a meet and greet tomorrow with our team. It’s a chance for us to get to know each other, and––”

“And the press to take pictures?” Karly finished.

Benjamin snorted. “Yeah, there might be a few interviews as well.”

She glanced at me. “Why don’t you go let the rest of the girls here know, and I’ll send a text to the freshmen.”

I agreed, relieved to have an excuse to leave, and offered a grimace that I hoped looked more like a smile to the guys. The Greek god had relaxed a bit, and once again, the strong sense that I’d seen him somewhere before tugged at me. Maybe he just had one of those faces.

As I passed each door upstairs, I knocked and told my teammates about the glorified photo opportunity we were required to attend. As annoying as it was, we all knew this was coming. Not that we’d been warned, but a brand new team being added to a school was a big deal. Especially when it was a women’s team. I gave a handful of interviews before arriving, and would likely have to endure even more through the coming weeks until the excitement settled down.

When I finished telling everyone I could find, I went back to my room and sighed dramatically as I passed Chris.

“What’s wrong?” she asked with a laugh.

“I’m never going downstairs again.” I dropped onto my bed as ungracefully as possible.

“That might prove to be a bit more difficult than you think, but I’ll support you.”

“You’re the best.” I fell back onto my pillows.

“So, why is it not safe down there?”

“The door.”
