I blink. I expected him to deny it. I want to know more, but later. I turn my attention to Jonas. “How did you figure out Ariel’s coming?”

“Dot is a siren.”

“She’s that good?”

He nods. “Oh yeah, she’s highly psychic. I didn’t know she was in the Reaping until I saw Caleb carrying you and followed him to this house.”

“Fuck,” I mutter, and cast the wolf a glance. I start toward the door. “Let’s get that armor up.”

Chapter Seventeen

ETHAN

I enter Raith’s office. He’s not at his desk. I turn to head to his assistant’s office but stop when she enters the office.

She halts, glances at his desk, and frowns.

“I guess you don’t know where he is either,” I say.

Rebecca crosses to his desk and picks up the cellphone lying there. She holds the cellphone up for me to see and shakes her head. “Doesn’t do any good when he doesn’t take it with him, does it?”

“No.” I chuckle.

Raith enters.

“It’s about time,” Rebecca says.

He continues around the desk to his chair and sits down. “I assume you need something.”

“A Detective Holly Mills is here to see Leilah Crowe,” Rebecca says.

“What?” Raith blurts.

My heartbeat accelerates.

“What does the detective want with Ms. Crowe?” Raith demands.

“She won’t tell me.”

Raith’s mouth thins. “Please show her into my office.”

Rebecca nods, then hurries from the room.

“Any idea what this is about?” I ask in a low voice.

He grunts. “Anything is possible where she’s concerned.”

A moment later, Rebecca returns with a tall, thirty-something brunette.

“This is Director Raith Vanderkoff,” Rebecca tells the woman and angles her head toward Raith.

“Detective Mills,” the woman says before Rebecca can finish introductions. She extends a hand to Raith.

Raith shakes her hand, then says, “Thank you, Rebecca. Why don’t you take off for the night?”

She hesitates, then says, “Thank you,” and leaves.

Raith shifts his attention to the detective and says, “This is Ethan Bordeau, one of our instructors.”
