“No, not really,” he shrugs, helping himself to my omelet. I sit back and cross my arms over my chest, glaring at him.

“Okay, is there a reason you’re here, sitting next to me, eating my breakfast, then?” I ask.

He winces. “Sorry, bad habit. I’m one of six kids. Mom just used to throw the food in the middle of the table and tell us to go for it. Anyway,” he says, getting the conversation back on track, “I won’t hang around. I just came to return this before I go to the gym, then I’ll drag your intended’s sorry ass out of his pit later.” He puts Cindy’s phone down on the table and walks off. I turn to Cindy and now raise my eyebrows at her.

“Care to explain that?” I ask her, and she flushes red. She shoves the phone in her pocket and mutters something too low for me to hear. “Cindy?” I ask with a frown, sure she’s keeping something from me. “What’s going on?”

“Lennon couldn’t remember what happened the other night. They went out drinking for his bachelor party, and he woke up with no memory at all about what happened. Rick had been texting me that whole night. He thought it might help them piece together what happened if they drank too much.”

I laugh. “Are you kidding me?” I shake my head, feeling sorry for poor Lennon. How much trouble could he have gotten himself into with my dad tagging along, anyway? I glance at my watch, remembering I need to leave soon to pick up Emily. I smile, an idea beginning to form in my head, and I giggle at the thought of it. “Oh, this is great.”

“It is?” Cindy says, confused. “Why?”

“Because,” I say, grinning, “I’m going to give Lennon something to stress about.”

“So, let me get this straight,” Emily says. “You want me to knock on Lennon’s door and pretend to be some woman he cheated on you with?”

“When you say it like that, it sounds crazy,” I grin. “He went out for his bachelor party and can’t remember a thing. I just want to play a little joke on him,” I explain, innocently.

“And you’re sure he’s not going to kill you when he finds out?” she asks, getting her bags out of the car. “He’d want to be one very understanding guy,” she adds.

I’d just arrived back at the resort from picking Emily up. Two years older than me, Emily is the only daughter of my dad’s older brother, Michael. I used to see a lot more of her when I was younger—in fact, the last time I saw her was nearly three years ago. We’d reconnected on Facebook a few months ago, and I told her about the wedding. It would have been awkward if I hadn’t invited her.

“It’s just a harmless little joke,” I say, rolling my eyes. I’d forgotten how serious Emily can be. I guess that’s what happens when you’re a pre-med student in a family of doctors. “Are you going to help me, or not?”

I’d never believe for a second that Lennon would cheat on me, but if he did, it would probably be with someone as hot as Emily. She’s simply stunning, and the perfect person to play out my little joke.

“Sure, okay, if it’s what you really want,” she finally says with a grin. “It’s your wedding… or funeral if it all goes to hell. Just leave me out of it, if that happens, ok?”

“Deal”

Chapter Five

Lennon

I’m a lucky guy. I know that, but as I lay on my bed, staring at the ceiling, all I can think about is just how lucky I am to have Darcy in my life. Somehow, I’ve managed to get the hottest, sexiest woman I’ve ever met, who drives me crazy in every way, to agree to marry me.

The wedding is in two days, and I can see the stress is wearing Darcy down. Sure, not much has gone the way we’d planned it. I wish she’d relax a bit and not worry so much about what may, or may not go wrong. She’d enjoy this so much more if she’d just let loose and have fun with it.

Like you had fun at your bachelor party? I ignore the little voice in the back of my mind, taunting me, and go back to thinking about my future wife. That lasts for about five minutes when a knock on the door interrupts my thoughts. I sigh, and drag myself off the bed, ready to tell whoever it is invading my daydreams to go away. I didn’t ask for any room service, so it’s got to be, Rick. It’s always Rick.
