“Grandma is so wise and smart,” Scarlett says to me and I rub the back of my neck. So much for getting some sleep tonight.
He can’t hurt me; I’m safe and keeping him here will keep everyone I care about safe too.
“Okay. I’ll keep you updated.”
My grandmother stands, her hand coming up to my cheek, where she lovingly caresses my skin.
“All will be well, Iris. I feel it.”
She portals out of my home. When I glance around my room, I groan, yanking one of my pillows out from the man’s massive head and going to sleep on the couch.
While I’m grumbling about it, Scarlett scampers on to the bed.
“Scarlett, what are you doing?”
“Just because you can’t sleep on the bed doesn’t mean I shouldn’t,” she gives me sass back.
“You can’t be serious. You’re going to sleep next to him?” I ask the traitorous fox.
She doesn’t respond, instead she curls up into a small little ball right next to the strange man. I hardly get any sleep as I worry about what his arrival means, and even worse, what his words mean.
He called me his mate. His fucking mate.
With all the chaos of him turning up bloody at my shop, I haven’t really processed that. He has to be lying, because there’s no way fate would tie me to a monster.
Right?
Chapter 12
Adam
The Slayer is sleeping and I feel like I’ve been hit by a fucking bus.
I go to tug my arms free, realizing that yet again, my wrists are bound. My stomach grumbles and I have to piss something fierce when suddenly something pounces on top of my chest.
“He’s awake!” A feminine, cheerful voice echoes in my head. I swear to god if I have to share this body with someone else…“Can you hear me?”
“Yes,” I mumble and the fox jumps up and down on my chest, and it feels like each paw weighs eight-hundred pounds.
“Oh my goodness. Iris! He can hear me too!”
A petite woman, wearing a Fleetwood Mac T-shirt and shorts so short I can see her lean legs, comes into frame. It’s the woman the Slayer has deemed is his mate and there’s no way this insane entity that’s taken me over could ever pull a woman like this. She’s otherworldly in a way, with clear, gorgeous, glowing brown skin, a pierced button nose, and honey-gold eyes that draw you in.
I’m done gawking at her as she points what looks like a wand right in the center of my forehead.
“You can hear Scarlett in your mind?” she asks.
“Yes. Listen, you’ve got to help me,” I plead with her, not even caring that witches are a whole thing now. I mean, after you’re possessed and kill a slew of vampires, what’s adding witches to the mix?
“Who are you and what do you want?” she asks.
The fox tilts her head, and I swear she’s trying to play bad cop, but she seems like she wants to lick my face. “Yeah, who are you and what do you want?”
“My name is Adam. A few weeks ago I was a photographer and artist and then the Slayer took over my body. This is the most I’ve been able to speak since he took over. He shuts me out most of the time, but I think because we’re injured, he’s in a deep sleep.”
The witch/woman blinks at me, her wand slowly lowering to her side.
“Slayer?” she questions.
