He isn’t sharp with her, genuinely if there’s anyone in the universe that won’t be harmed by him, I think it’s her, not that I’ll admit it out loud. He’s obsessed, possessive, and still dangerous.

“I didn’t do any magic to send you away, if that’s what you’re asking. I just made sure that he was okay, which he is. He’s agreed to stay in the shop as well so that we can stay safe.”

That word prickles him, our shoulders going tighter. “And why is it you want us to stay in your shop, sweet Iris?”

Shit, what answer is she going to give him?

“It’s not safe right now,” she says simply and the Slayer bristles.

“Why is it not safe?”

“You already made a vow, Slayer.”

“You’ve tricked me?” he asks. There’s a mix of pride along with frustration.

“I haven’t tricked you. Things are just complicated, and it’s best for everyone if you stay within the wards.”

He narrows our eyes at her but gives up. He doesn’t want to piss off Iris anymore than he already has, so for now he isn’t asking questions.

I need to do my best to get along with him as well. We need to keep him happy and indoors where he can’t hurt anyone and where no one can kill us.

Part of me is afraid to trust Iris, or if any of this can even work, but what other choice do I have?

Chapter 19

Iris

Isit across from the Slayer, wondering how I’m going to pull this all off. I have to be careful that he doesn’t figure out any of my plans.

He can’t know that Warin is still alive and in love with my best friend, that there’s a bunch of ancient vampires milling about town looking for him, or that I’m conspiring with Adam to send him back to the void.

It’s what’s best for everyone. Ember has found the love of her life, and I need to protect that while also trying to give Adam his life back. The Slayer will go back to where he belongs and life will be simple again, the visions will go away, and I’ll go back to just being me, I guess?

Sure, there’s this cosmic pull between us, but I know that if he goes back to the void these uncomfortable feelings will disappear, too. I didn’t ask for this, and I refuse to put up with some magically engineered fate bullshit.

I’m sitting across from him as he taps his long, calloused fingers against the table. How do you keep a vampire slayer entertained?

“Are you tired?” I ask and he gives me a so-so motion.

I glance at his clothes. They’re the same ones he wore when he showed up at my shop. Work pants and what looks like a dress shirt that’s had the arms ripped off.

“I could transfigure some of my clothes to fit you,” I tell him.

This has his chest puffing up with pride. “I would love that, my Iris.”

I sigh, knowing that there’s no point in telling him to stop calling me his Iris. So, instead, I head to my dresser, grabbing one of the largest shirts I own, along with a flowing maxi skirt. If, goddess forbid, I need to take him out of the shop, then I’ll have to get him something more fitting, but for now, this will do.

With my wand in my hand and a flick of my wrist, I stretch the shirt and shape the skirt to look like men’s pants. He watches me like I’m fascinating, and I clear my throat as I hand him his transfigured clothes.

“Thank you, my magical, wonderful mate,” he says and I try to force a smile even though there’s this twinge of pain fluttering through my chest. It’s almost like the magic forged between us knows that I’m planning to betray him and it doesn’t like it.

I expect him to go into the bathroom and change his clothes, but of course he doesn’t. Instead, he fully undresses in front of me. The man just gets bare ass naked. His tall tattooed body is on complete display, along with his large swinging cock that I definitely shouldn’t have looked at and, of course, he notices.

“Do not be ashamed to look upon your mate,” he says, confidently spreading his arms wide, like he’s showing off his body.

I clear my throat, looking away.

He laughs, and I can hear the shuffle of him putting on his clothes. “I believe that the universe waited until I had the most attractive vessel for you. Are you pleased?”
