“Why, what big arms you have. You’re showing me the way?”

“I’ll throw you over my shoulder in a minute if you don’t behave,” I growl.

She really likes that.

“I’ll be on my worst behavior,” she says, poking me in the ribs to get my attention.

I’m going to tease her for a bit. I’m not going to do what she wants just because she’s horny.

I mean, so am I. But I’m always hard around this girl.

“Sit down,” I say, nodding at one of my kitchen stools.

“Yes, sir.”

I head to the fridge and get myself a beer. I better catch up to Chloe’s drunken level.

“Oh, getting yourself a beer,” Chloe coos. She thinks she’s being testing. I’ll show her testing in a minute.

“Was it just you and Maddie, then?” I ask her. “You two having a girls’ day?”

“Guess what? My mom turned up.”

I nearly spit out my beer. “Astrid? She’s in LA?”

“What other mom would I be talking about, silly? Yes, Astrid. Axel and mine mother. The woman who gave birth to me.”

The alcohol is making her bold, I see.

“Yeah?”

“She told us about some guy she used to see way before Axel and I came along. It’s kind of a cute story, actually. You know, I reckon it would be really nice for my mom to meet this guy again.”

“I don’t really understand what you’re saying, Chloe. How about I get you some nice cold water?”

“That would be wonderful.”

I roll my eyes and get her a glass. She starts talking non-stop now. Drunkenly running her mouth.

“It’s so good I signed that contract,” she says. “I’m so excited for what’s to come. I want to thank you again, Bishop, for helping me with it all.”

“I put you in the right direction, that’s all. You’re the one who has the talent.”

“Damn right,” she replies.

“And what are you planning to do now, Chloe? What’s your living situation going to be like?”

Maybe I’ll get an honest answer from her. I don’t want her to leave. The last few days have been the best of my life. I can’t let her go a second time.

“I’m going to stay with Gary,” she says.

“The gay guy?”

“Yeah, the gay guy. He’s offered to rent me that room for a while until everything is sorted out with Mickey Miller and stuff. I’ve had a phone call with his team and we’re already coming up with ideas for the album and everything.”

I nod. “That’s a good thing to do.”

“Damn right it is.”
