Blood
Nathaniel
Nathaniel and Kira withdrew from the campsite as night began to fall. He led her to a nearby grassy outcrop overlooking the small village of Nordokk. They sat side by side, his arm around her waist as they watched the last of the sun melt into the distant hills in pools of golden light.
“I’ve made a decision,” Kira announced as twilight settled in, and the first stars appeared.
“Hmm?” He pressed a kiss against her hair, unsure if she welcomed the gesture. “And what is your decision?”
“I’ll help you.”
“Help?” he asked gently. “But I don’t want you to help. I want you to lead. ‘Help’ is why you have us.”
“Mary and Byron, maybe. And Haley and Ana. But you’ll be the King.”
“At first, yes. But Kira, I do not intend to be on equal footing with you. You will not be a queen. You will be so much more than that. Once we succeed, there will be no need for kings and queens. There will only be you.”
Kira frowned. “That sounds lonely.”
“It’s always lonely at the top.”
“The nights are the loneliest,” she said, wringing her hands.
Did she regret her words?
He placed his hand on hers to steady them. “Yes, they are.”
But they don’t have to be, he wanted to say.
Kira cleared her throat. “So, what will happen after we succeed? I mean…that is, will you stay at Wintermaw? I know you’ll be married, but…”
He didn’t dare presume what she meant, but he had a strong inkling. “In the evenings, in your private bedchamber, you may be whoever you wish to be, with whomever you wish.” He meant to end the sentence there, but then thought better of it. He would lay all his cards down, come whatever may. “If you were in need of company…I would be happy to oblige.”
“Good,” she said with a hint of mischief gleaming in her eyes. “Oblige me now.”
He blinked. “Oh? And how may I be of service?”
Kira turned so she was facing him, her lips inches from his. “You offered me your blood earlier.”
He ran his fingers through her hair. “Not only my blood. I’m offering you the whole world.”
“The world can wait,” she said, holding his gaze. “Tonight, I only want you.”
Nathaniel leant in and kissed her, his lips barely brushing hers. They were soft and perfect. “Tonight, tomorrow, forever—that is when I want you, Kira.”
Their kiss deepened, their eyes hooded and breaths mingling as they savoured the moment, with all of its promise and uncertainty hanging in the air between them.
When they eventually drew apart, Kira’s eyes searched his, and the way she wetted her full lips made him want to go in for a second kiss.
Instead, he drew his hand to his mouth and pierced his wrist with his fangs. Hot blood trickled down his arm, and he held it out for Kira to drink.
She looked apprehensive as she bent her head. Her lips were warm on his wrist. Her expression soon turned pensive as she lapped up his blood, her slender hands tightening on his arm. She let out a soft moan, and he had to subtly adjust himself as his cock hardened at the sound.
He’d had the same reaction when drinking her blood—full mast before he’d even drawn blood—but he’d never known that giving blood could elicit the same reaction.
No one had ever made him feel the way she did.
His body grew warm and his senses hazy, and he smiled as Kira’s mind met his in a gentle, hopeful caress. No sooner had he opened his thoughts to her than her hunger and longing surged in, sweeping him away until his head was reeling.
