Lovers.

It was why she’d finally felt ready to morph in front of him. Showing him her true form like that was a huge deal.

It wasn’t that she was shy—had she not been keeping her true form a secret, she would have had no qualms wandering through the school in her wolf forms like some of the other shifters did. But in the intimacy of the bedroom, when it was only them, it was different. Private, somehow.

It didn’t matter that Nathaniel already knew what she was, or that he remembered a time when she’d had nine selves.

For a female wolf, shifting meant something more.

A lot more.

Just as Nathaniel had equated biting her more than once to loving her, letting him see her true selves, to touch and feel her intimately, was like showing him a part of her soul.

From Nathaniel’s reaction, she could tell he’d understood the significance of her gesture: she had chosen him as her mate.

With her personality laid bare, with every strength and flaw apparent, she’d waited for him to choose her back. She’d had no expectations that he would want her in her transfigured forms. Would a vampire want her in that way when she appeared as a creature? Would he think her the monster? A beast to recoil from?

She didn’t think so, but her vulnerability had caused doubts to creep into her mind.

Nathaniel’s heartfelt response, however, had laid those fears to rest. His revered gaze had made her heart beat faster, and he’d soon convinced her that he wanted her in every way—especially this way, in her most natural, true forms.

It meant far more to her than her virginity had, which besides the power it had given her in choosing a pack, was not something she’d been particularly attached to. While Mark had taken her virginity like he was taking something from her, Nathaniel had given her himself and made her whole; his love and acceptance mending the tender edges of her heart.

She hoped the feeling would last.

Chapter 29

Cake and Love

Kira

Her newfound happiness made returning to her human form and leaving the hotel room difficult. After Nathaniel checked out at the front desk, Kira prolonged the inevitable by dragging him into the hotel’s downstairs restaurant and ordering everything on the breakfast menu.

She savoured each bite slowly, and ordered a second helping of a creamy vanilla cake, which was the best thing she’d ever tasted.

Nathaniel had long ago set aside his cutlery, but he seemed content to watch her eat as he drank his coffee.

“I never took you for a vanilla girl,” he said in amusement as she softly moaned her way through delicious spoonfuls of buttercream—she couldn’t help it. The frosting melted in her mouth.

She rolled her eyes at the innuendo as she swallowed her food and said, “Yeah, well…you never took me vanilla before. Until last night, anyway.”

His eyes gleamed in response, and she could tell he was recalling their missionary pose. “No, I don’t suppose I did.”

She bit back a smile. “I liked it though.”

Nathaniel set his mug down on the table. “So did I.”

A teasing thought occurred to her. She focused on her plate. It probably wasn’t a good idea, but the words slipped out before she could stop them. “You should have that at your wedding.”

The air shifted between them like a cool breeze.

“Have what at my wedding, pet?”

“Vanilla cake,” she said innocently, popping another spoonful in her mouth before glancing back up. She had the dreaded feeling she was tempting fate, but…why not?

Nathaniel had frozen still, his eyes boring into hers.

With each passing second, she regretted having spoken. She’d meant her comment as a light-hearted dig, but it hadn’t come out that way.
