She’d caught sight of Victoria from across the room, silhouetted against a grand circular window. Although it was hard to be sure with the glare from the sunlight, it looked as though the vampiress was staring at them with her head tipped to one side as if scrutinising them.
Kira’s view of Victoria was blocked when someone stepped into her line of sight. She craned her neck to catch sight of the vampiress amidst the shifting crowd, but Victoria was gone.
Chapter 31
Special Privileges
Kira
On their way to History class, Nathaniel took a detour, guiding Kira up an endless winding staircase. They reached an empty classroom at the top of the North Tower.
This must be Professor Zott’s classroom.
The other students had described the pristine room in horrified whispers, but it was only now, as she gazed around, that she realised they hadn’t been exaggerating about the feature wall. It was painted black and lined with whips, paddles, riding crops, and other punishment equipment. The leather and steel twinkled ominously in the early sunlight, and she felt a chill as she stared at the vast collection. They were pristine, but for all she’d heard of the suffering Zott subjected his students to, they may as well have been covered in blood.
Only Nathaniel would have dared come here.
He shut the door and sat in the large chair behind the teacher’s desk, his demeanour calm as he advised her on strategies for exploring her magical powers.
Kira sat on a chair opposite him listening attentively, but she soon grew bored of the magical theory lesson. It was based on information Nathaniel had learnt and memorised from Barbara long ago in the hope that he could one day pass it on to her. She appreciated his thoughtfulness but didn’t find any of it particularly useful.
Her magic felt much more intuitive than words could describe. The charts Nathaniel was drawing on the sheet of parchment between them were making her head spin. She might have been half vampire, but when it came to learning, she was all wolf, and would have much preferred to be outside than looking at graphs of hyperbolas and other squiggly lines.
The only tangent she wanted to see was Nathaniel’s cock between her curved breasts, an act she’d found both bizarre and arousing last night when they’d done it.
And now I’m thinking about his cock.
“These two foci are the wellsprings of magical energy,” Nathaniel was saying enthusiastically, his quill drawing bold lines that seeped into the rich paper. “These energies converge at the centre, which is called the nexus point. Do you see?”
Kira blinked and nodded politely, but all she could think of was how attractive his hand was as it drew deft strokes across the page, and how pleasant the low rumble of his voice was. She loved that he took the time to share this with her, explaining it so patiently. She did her best to pay attention, she really did, but her mind simply didn’t work the way his did. Try as she might, she was soon lost in thought as she played with a loose thread on her skirt’s hem.
His countenance was gentlemanly, pleasant, and radiating intelligence, and she found it so alluring. It was such a contrast to how serious he’d been last night as he fucked her, slowly and possessively.
Nathaniel stopped talking when she stifled a yawn.
“Am I boring you, pet?”
“No, not at all,” she answered quickly. “I’m just having trouble following all this. I don’t see magic the way you—or Barbara—describe it.”
Nathaniel considered this. “Perhaps I’m not explaining it in the best way.”
Kira laughed. He was too polite to say what everyone knew: that wolves usually made for terrible students, at least in the classroom. They were restless, hot-blooded and quick to act up. But with the exception of Potions, they excelled in practical tasks, and they dominated the sports field in everything except badminton—partly because it was favoured by vampires, but mostly because hitting a shuttlecock was stupid.
“Perhaps, some mental stimulation would be helpful,” Nathaniel suggested softly.
Kira froze, the loose thread she’d been playing with slipping between her fingertips.
“Something that might hold your interest,” he continued, “and keep your mind engaged.”
She gulped, her heart beating faster. “What do you suggest?”
“Come now, pet. Use your initiative.”
She avoided the urge to lick her lips, but her gaze drifted down to the crotch of his trousers—not that she could see it from the table in between them.
Nathaniel remained very still, waiting.
Waiting for her.
