Her gaze darted to the bed as if remembering why he was here.

“You were generous to offer to take Molly’s place,” he continued, hoping she would take the hint. He wanted her to invite him to the bed. It would be better that way.

He wasn’t sure if he wanted to proceed if she didn’t. Maybe.

Susie didn’t reply.

He took another step closer, and then another, closing the distance between them until they were toe to toe. He was a few inches taller than her, and he was pleased with the way she had to lift her chin to meet his gaze. Her lips quivered slightly as she searched his face.

“You want to drink my blood,” she stated as if hoping he would say ‘no’.

“Yes, I do. But you seem nervous.”

“I’m fine.”

“And unwilling.” His voice deepened as if in warning. Most wolves knew better than to obstruct feeding time. It caused all sorts of problems, both at the academy, and when they returned to the real world.

Susie gave her head a tiny shake like she was battling herself internally. Then, she unfolded her arms and placed them by her sides, and he sensed her conscious effort to meet his gaze and offer him a polite smile. “No, not unwilling, sir.” A moment’s hesitation, then, “I’m willing.”

“Good.” She was lying, but that didn’t matter. He was simply relieved he wouldn’t have to force her.

He reached to touch her cheek.

Susie’s eyes fluttered shut, but she did not pull away, and he took that as a positive sign. He was weak, hungry, and a touch besotted by this female wolf who was not at all what he’d expected.

It was going to be an interesting night.

He caressed her face, then slipped his hand into her hair. He shuffled closer until their bodies touched and placed his other hand on her throat. He could sense her rapid pulse and the slight tremor of her body.

It excited him.

Is she scared? Or repulsed?

It didn’t matter. He’d done nothing to deserve her thinking well of him, but he would ensure that she liked what he did to her.

He licked his lips, trying to imagine what Susie’s blood would taste like when it finally coated his tongue. Would it be as sweet as she smelt? Like wild spring flowers?

The seconds stretched as Arken surveyed her features. Susie had an adorably round face, a delicate button nose, and a generous dusting of freckles too numerous to count. Unlike most shifters, her skin was pale—her parents must have been from the colder climate up north—and her lips were a lovely shade of pink even though she wore no makeup. And her eyes…they were simply captivating.

Her collar fell open alluringly, and he caressed the exposed skin of her neck and decolletage as he fantasised about leaning in and sinking his fangs into her soft flesh. Right here, right now.

His throat went dry at the thought.

As for the rest of her body…that remained to be seen. The loose flannel pyjamas left everything to the imagination, which both aroused and infuriated him.

“Sir?” Susie asked, blinking up at him through pale lashes.

“Hm?”

“A-aren’t you going to…?”

“Yes, I am.”

But he didn’t bite her. He was on the verge of something exhilarating, and he wanted to stand here a while longer and savour the anticipation of it.

Or maybe he was close to passing out. That would explain why he felt so light and airy, or why tingling currents were coursing through him.

Susie stood still as he lightly ran his fingers from her temple down along her cheek. She didn’t recoil, and her lips parted slightly as her eyes grew hooded. “Then...what are you waiting for?”
