Zott made a sound of approval. “Come to think of it, I don’t believe I’ve ever had to discipline you…” He tilted his head at her. “Have I, Susanna?”
Susie felt a chill travel through her as a memory flashed in her mind of all the times she’d narrowly escaped punishment in Zott’s classes. He had once instructed a vampiress in her year to spank her for hesitating when instructed to fetch. The experience had been humiliating, but as far as Zott’s usual punishments went, she’d gotten off easily.
She shook her head slowly. “No, sir. Never.”
“No, indeed. I’m sure you won’t give me cause today, either.”
“No, sir. I am…” She gritted her teeth as her stomach roiled and forced a smile to compensate. “I’m at your service.”
“Good.” Zott rubbed his hands together before gesturing at a faded white X that marked the floor in the room’s centre. “Let us begin.”
Susie’s legs felt like lead as she moved to stand on the mark. She tried not to stare at Zott’s beady eyes; too much eye contact was perceived as disrespectful, but she also knew better than to stare at her feet. Zott liked an easy challenge, one where his conquest was earned but guaranteed. He detested weakness, and he had no mercy for those who grovelled. Striking the right balance was the key to keeping him in a forgiving mood.
So instead of looking him in the eye, or looking at the floor, Susie focused on his sagging jowls. She braced herself and asked his favourite question: “How would you like me, Professor Zott?”
He rubbed his thumb and forefingers together as if savouring her words, a gesture she’d seen him do countless times before when a female’s slick coated them. “On your knees.”
Susie’s stomach twisted, but she smoothly lowered herself to the hard floor, trying to calm the queasiness mounting inside her. Zott usually preferred the females this way—on their knees—but she had a feeling he would want her to do more than simply kneel today.
The moment her knees hit the floor, multiple sharp gasps sounded from her left. Susie stole another glance at the students. Many of the wolf students looked shocked as though they hadn’t expected her to kneel so readily.
Susie frowned, staring straight ahead at the large mirror fixed to the front side of Zott’s desk. She was struck by her reflection—a female wolf shifter in academy uniform, with a red tartan skirt riding halfway up her thighs, a navy blazer over a white shirt, and a large red ribbon instead of the necktie the men wore. She looked pliable and docile, which was the only state that Zott accepted. Any attempts to rebel quickly led to violence, and she wondered what had happened to the female wolf who was crying. Her buttons did not line up properly, which together with her dishevelled hair gave Susie an inkling.
She could feel judgement pressing on her from the first-years, and she chewed the inside of her cheek. Her own year level wouldn’t have looked at her like that. They understood how things were.
The first-years would soon learn as well. It was a shock to the system.
They had better learn fast.
There were plenty of wolves over the years who had resisted Zott’s attempts to train them during his Pet Obedience Class, including a few wolves in her year level. But Zott had broken them all at the induction sessions he held in the first month of semester every year. He had an impressive stamina for sex and tried to get to every wolf within the first few weeks, even the males. He hadn’t ever come inside Susie. He seemed to reserve that part for the males.
Susie lifted her chin slightly at her reflection.
I’m better than this.
One day, she wouldn’t kneel for anyone.
This wouldn’t be forever. There was more to life than pleasing vampires simply to survive and to avoid a beating. She hoped that day would come soon.
One of the vampires whispered to another, and the other smirked in response. That was fine. She didn’t expect anything else from the recognised ‘superior race’.
Even so, the wolves’ obvious disapproval made her feel a guilty pang, as if she were somehow letting them down by complying so quickly. The guilt coiled tight in her chest, festering there as she felt every pair of eyes on her.
Ignore them. Focus on Zott.
Susie’s heart hardened.
One day, she would help make life better at Volmasque Academy, but not by rebelling. Whilst she admired the bravery of those who’d stood up to Zott, they’d ultimately achieved very little beyond the permanent scars on their backs. No, real change had to come from within, and that meant becoming part of the system. And being in the good graces of vampires like Zott.
And so, she would kneel.
And wait.
And look for an opportunity to make things better.
I can kneel, as long as I don’t lose sight of my end goal.
Professor Zott made another approving sound. “See, class? It’s as easy as that. Once a wolf is desensitised, following commands becomes effortless.”
